(Continued from previous page) Yubashiri (streaks of nie) are also tempered along the mune (back ridge). The works (of Sadayoshi, Sadamune, etc.) are varied and diverse in character. The kitae (forging) is the same, but there is an oral tradition noted above regarding this. One: Munechika (annotated: jō-jō / supreme ranking), Reign of Emperor Ichijō, around the Eien era (987–989), Sanjō Kokaji The tachi's shape is slender, and the kissaki (tip) is neatly compact. The mune (back ridge) is iori-mune (peaked ridge), and the kitae (forging pattern) is masame-hada (straight grain). It is exceedingly fine and refined. The ji (surface) is dark and has a purplish hue that shines. However, early works have a somewhat whitish ji color. From the middle period onward, the forging became more skillful, and the ji began to gleam with a blue brilliance. After that, though the ji color remains bluish, it has a doromeki (murky, subdued luster) with a neba-ki (sticky, root-like) quality, and the shinogi of the tachi is slightly wide. For the most part, a suguha (straight hamon) is present. The suguha is fine and narrow, with ko-ashi (small feet-like activity) entering the temper line. There are also small midare-ba (irregular hamon) with tare-midare (drooping irregular temper), and some are tempered with a narrow midare-ba at the base while the overall hamon is suguha. Nie is abundant. The nakago (tang) narrows toward the tip. The yasurime (file marks) are sujikai (diagonal). The tip of the nakago is cut in a shape resembling a ken-gashira (sword pommel/tip), and there are also rounded examples. The mune (back ridge of the nakago) is angular, and the niku (thickness/flesh)... (continues on next page).
