(Continued from previous page) As for the inscription style, some are signed with all four characters "Sanjō Munechika," some with just the two characters "Munechika," and some with only "Sanjō." There are also unsigned (mumei) examples. These are included among the items submitted to the authorities (chūshin-mono). Further details are found in oral tradition.
One: Yoshiie (annotated split text: jō-jō / highest ranking) — Said to be a child of Munechika. According to one theory, copies exist bearing a secret (false) signature (mitsu-mei).
The tachi's shape is the same as Munechika's. The forging (kitae) is masame-hada (straight grain), fine in texture. The ji color is bluish. The hamon features ko-midare-ba (small irregular temper). There are also gentle notare-midare (undulating irregular temper), and some are forged with slender suguha (straight temper line) with ko-ashi (small foot-like formations). Nie is abundant. The mune is iori-style, and the tachi's overall form is upright and solid. Perhaps because of Munechika's hidden signature (kakushi-mei), the hi (groove) is slightly shallow. The shape of the nakago (tang) closely resembles that of Munechika. The yasurime (file marks) are slightly diagonal (sujikai). The mune is rounded (maru-mune), and the shinogi shoulder (hata) is also slightly rounded. One should pay careful attention to the forging (kitae) and ji color when examining these blades. Further details are found in oral tradition.
One: Arikuni (annotated split text: ge-jō / second-lowest upper ranking) — Reign of Emperor Ichijō — Around the Chōhō era (999–1003) — Disciple of Munechika
The tachi's shape is slender with a high shinogi (ridge). The forging is masame-hada (straight grain), fine in texture. The iori-mune (ridged back) is slightly deep. The ji color is somewhat whitish yet dark, with a glimmering quality, giving an impression of refined craftsmanship. The hamon features ko-midare (small irregular temper) with abundant nie...
