(Continued from previous page) ...The ko-midare hamon has abundant nie, and the edge has a soft, diffuse quality (hō-hō to shita). The hamon color is slightly dark, reflecting a hard steel forging. The overall impression (fūjō) appears to be that of a Kyō-mono (Kyoto-made blade), and the construction is upright and honest. Further details are found in oral tradition.
One: Kanenaga (annotated split text: ge-jō / second-lowest upper ranking) — Reign of Emperor Go-Suzaku — Around the Chōkyū era (1040–1044) — Son of Arikuni
The tachi's shape closely resembles that of his father (Arikuni). The forging, ji color, and hamon pattern are all the same as Arikuni's. However, the quality ranking (kurai) is far inferior to that of his father. There are many tachi and katana with a carved hi (groove).
One: Kuninaga (no ranking annotation) — Same reign, same period — Second son of Arikuni
The tachi's shape resembles that of Ayanokōji Sadatoshi. However, the color of the jigane (surface steel) is different (from Sadatoshi's). The forging is masame-hada (straight grain). The ji color is somewhat whitish. Nevertheless, it has a beautiful color and is the work of a skilled craftsman. The iori-mune (ridged back) is deep, and the shinogi (ridge) is high. The kissaki (point) is slightly rounded and compact (tsutsumaru). The hamon is midare-ba (irregular temper), with the hamon color being darker toward the base (moto) and whiter toward the tip. It is a beautiful piece. Beyond these, there are works bearing the signature "Kuninaga" in Yamato province. These are of a later period. As for the Kyō-Kuninaga, there is a deep-rooted tradition regarding the character "Kuni" (国) in the signature, and there appear to be secret writings and oral transmissions regarding this matter.
