(Continued from previous page) ...the hamon is upright and refined in character. Yō (sunken, bright areas of activity) appear within the hamon from the edge inward, with nie forming inside, producing a coarse, jagged (ira-ira) type of nie. The interior of the kissaki is tempered in suguha (straight hamon). The mune (back edge) shows frequent yubashiri (subsidiary tempered areas running along the spine). There are also examples without yubashiri — this is a secret teaching (hiji). Found among works with coarse nie. The nakago (tang) has its flat surface (hira) roughened/textured, and the shinogi-suji (ridge line) is made to fade/flow toward the tip. The mune is maru-mune (rounded spine). The habaki (blade collar) is also rounded. The famous sword known as "Fudō Kuniyuki" is precisely this. Its length is two shaku, nine sun, nine bu (approximately 90.6 cm). On the front face (omote) of this kodachi, at the haki-dashi moto (sweeping base area),
there is a hi (carved groove), and above the image of Fudō Myō-ō (the Immovable Wisdom King), a fine secondary groove (hoso-hi) is added alongside a wider yellow-tinted groove (ki-hi); on the surface of the koshi (lower portion of the blade face), a kumo (cloud motif) groove and a Kurikara (dragon-wrapped-sword motif) are carved. In the upper portion there is a large groove. The reverse side is the same. The activities (hataraki) of the hamon are difficult to exhaust even with a brush. Furthermore, there are oral traditions (kuden) regarding this sword.
One: Kunitoshi — Reign of Emperor Hanazono — Around the Enkyō era (1308–1311) — Son of Kuniyuki
The tachi's shape closely resembles that of his father Kuniyuki. In the midare-ba (irregular hamon) along the koshi (lower portion), there are many clove-shaped chōji-ba (clove pattern) resembling "laughing hands" (waraide). Toward the tip, the hamon transitions into a yellowish suguha (straight hamon), with ashi (feet) inserted at various points. However, in the upper section, □chōji... (Continued on next page)
