(Continued from previous page) ...there are also examples tempered with chōji (clove pattern) in the upper section. In the upper portion, the chōji forms large clusters (ō-fusa). In the suguha (straight hamon) with tari-midare (gentle irregular undulations), nie is abundant. The tachi with chōji-ba resemble those of Bizen Ichimonji and similar schools, but without nie; the kitae (forging) is masame (straight grain), the ji-iro (surface color) is dark, the upper color is reddish and has a glittering quality — it is a well-forged jigane (blade steel). The two-character signature "Kunitoshi" represents a highly skilled maker. Yubashiri (subsidiary tempered areas) are also tempered along the middle of the iori-mine (ridged spine). The interior of the kissaki is straight, with a slight tendency toward irregularity (secret teaching).
A note states: The period in which straight hamon were being tempered corresponds to Shōwa, Bunpō, and Gen'ō eras (approx. 1312–1321).
The tachi's shape has a wide and high shinogi (ridge). The iori-mine (ridged spine) is also slightly steep. Along the edge of the suguha, there are spots slightly set back from the edge where the nie-lined hamon is about as thick as a heavy thread. These are found roughly around the monouchi (striking area). Since it is suguha, the koshi-moto (lower portion near the base) is tempered in a yellowish tone for about four to five sun (approx. 12–15 cm). The kaeri (turnback at the kissaki) is not particularly long. Tantō (short swords) signed with the two-character "Kunitoshi" are rare. One exists in a private collection (shisen). The ji-iro (surface color) resembles that of Yoshimitsu. The kaeri is the same as that of the standard Kunitoshi. The nakago (tang) of the tachi closely resembles that of Kuniyuki. However, it should be noted that there are three generations sharing this same signature. The first generation is the most skilled. As for the second generation... (Continued on next page)
