One entry: Kunimitsu was active during the reign of Emperor Go-Daigo, around the Karyaku era (1326–1329), and was the son of Kunitoshi.
The tachi form resembles that of Kunitoshi but is slightly more slender. The iori-mune (peaked spine) is of medium height, and the kissaki (point) is also of medium length. The kasane (blade thickness) is made thick. The kitae (forging pattern) is masame (straight grain), and the jihada (surface texture of the blade) appears soft. The ji (surface) appears both dark and reddish.
In the midareba (irregular hamon), the chōji is not accelerated, and the tips of the midareba are subtly colored (tempered with gradation), applied at the koshi-moto (lower base area). The character of the hamon toward the upper portion
follows the same pattern as that of Kuniyuki and Kunitoshi. The interior of the kissaki is tempered in a slightly yellowish tone in the shape of the bōshi (temper pattern at the point). The color of the hamon appears bluish, and within the hamon, the grain of the kitae spreads thinly in a layered fashion — carrying a quality reminiscent of the kitae itself. Around the mono-uchi (striking zone) and mono-ya (upper portion of the blade), this quality is absent.
The oral tradition states: In a suguha (straight hamon) tachi, the hamon edge appears as though it has detached. Even though it is suguha, it is tempered with color gradation. The nie (martensite crystals) are coarse, and there are kana-mura (irregular metallic clusters) in the ji. Above the hamon, it appears faintly and softly as though transparency has been applied. Straight (sugu)... (Continued on next page)
