(Continued from previous page: regarding Kunitomo)
The niē (hard martensite crystals) are abundant, and yubashiri (a secondary temper line running along the spine area) is tempered along the mine (spine/back ridge). On tachi, from the monouchi (the striking area) upward toward the kissaki (tip), there is a niē-ha (hamon rich in niē) slightly set back from the hamon edge. On katana, the tempering extends into the fukura (the curved area near the tip). The bōshi (temper pattern in the kissaki area) is beautiful, the kaeri (turnback of the hamon in the bōshi) is short, and it is authentic (shinshō). For further details on these points, there is oral transmission (kuden).
One entry: Norikuni (則国) [interlinear note: Chūjō go-mono (upper-middle grade among imperial possessions)] — active during the reign of Emperor Juntoku, around the Kenpō era (1213–1219).
The sugata (form) of the tachi is slender, with a high sori (curvature). The kitae (forging) is masame (straight grain), so fine as to be almost indistinguishable (from hada patterns at first glance). The iori-mine (ridged back) is slightly subdued, and the kissaki (tip) is gently enclosed/modest. The ji color is dark and glittering. It is tempered with hosо-suguha (fine, straight hamon), and also with notare (gentle wave hamon). In general, it tends to temper hamon with yoshino (scenic variation / a pleasing aesthetic quality within the hamon). The niē are abundant, and the hamon color is bluish-white. Above the hamon, there is a fine mokume (wood-grain) kitae, and it is an exceedingly clear and refined forging. For ken (ritual blade / sword with double edge), the smith preferred to write the character in its standard script form (honmoji). The tip of the ken is carved so as not to be too sharp. For katana, the intention is to create a yaki-tsume bōshi (a bōshi in which the temper runs all the way to the tip with minimal or no kaeri). Even when a kaeri is present, it is short. A katana with a chū-suguha (middle/moderate straight hamon) should be considered superior. Those with midare-ha (irregular hamon) or notare tend to have inferior jitetsu (blade surface texture). Further details are transmitted orally (kuden).
