One entry: Kuniyoshi (国吉) [interlinear note: Supreme Imperial Treasure (jōjō go-mono)] — active during the reign of Emperor Shijō, around the Bunryaku era (1234–1235).
The sugata (form) of the tachi is slender, and the shinogi (ridge line) is slightly high and broad. The iori-mine (ridged spine) is slightly low. The kitae (forging) is masame (straight grain), and exceptionally fine. It appears to be forged such that a beautiful hada (surface texture) is visible. The sori (curvature) is also slightly high. The ji (surface) color is markedly blue. The blade is tempered in a narrow sugu-ha (straight hamon). However, finer works among them feature a chū-sugu-ha (medium straight hamon), and even in this smith's work there is a quality reminiscent of nijūba (double hamon). It is even more dignified and refined (shinshō) than the nijūba of Kunitomo (a blade by the related smith Kunitomo). The base color of the ji has a gleam to it — comparable, by way of analogy, to the gold (metallic luster) of a hai-katsuki (ash-covered) tenmoku (glazed ceramic). On re-tempered pieces, (the characteristics) follow and resemble (the original) yet remain distinctly (their own). The hamon color is remarkably white, and the niē (hard martensite crystals) are abundant. In the narrow sugu-ha of the hamon, utsuri (a misty reflection-like effect on the ji) is present. However, it is narrow, and there are cases where the jitetsu (surface texture) is coarse and unsuitable. From around the first year of Kakitsu (1441), there is a tradition of attribution associated with it, and as a celebrated treasure (meibutsu) of the realm, its fame is beyond question.
One entry: Hisakuni (久国) — active during the reign of the Retired Emperor Go-Toba, around the Genryaku era (1184–1185). Possibly a son of Kuniyoshi.
