(Continued from previous page — entry for Hisakuni)
The iori-mine (ridged spine) is slightly low. The kitae (forging) is masame (straight grain) and fine. The ji (surface) color is bluish and tinged with purple. Around the monouchi (the striking area of the blade), the ashi (feet — downward-running lines from the hamon) penetrate deeply into the interior of the hamon. According to oral tradition (kuden), this is said to reflect a thorough mastery of the quality of cutting. However, precisely because of their exceptional cutting ability, some blades have had their signatures re-struck (mei wo uchi-kaete) and have been passed off as ordinary swords (tsunemono). This is a secret matter (hiji). The hamon color is white, and the hamon edge (ha-fuchi) is like thin ice — clear and with refined niē (hard martensite crystals) — and the hamon is straight (sugu-ha). It resembles the work of Shintōgo Kunimitsu, and is beautiful and dignified. There is a kaeri (turnback of the hamon at the tip), and some examples likely have a yakitsume (hamon running to the very tip without turning back). This is a superior craftsman of relatively recent times. There are further oral traditions regarding this smith.
One entry: Kuniyasu (国安) [interlinear note: Upper-middle Imperial Treasure (chūjō go-mono)] — active during the same reign, the same period. Elder brother of Kunifusa (国總).
The sugata (form) of the tachi is slender and long, the shinogi (ridge line) is high, the kissaki (tip) is compact (tsumatte), and the iori-mine (ridged spine) is steep (kyū). The kitae is masame with a well-worked, supple hada (nere-ta hata). The ji color is dark and bluish. It is tempered in a narrow sugu-ha (straight hamon). The hamon color also appears bluish and hard, while the upper portion (near the spine) is white. The ji color and character of the hamon of the katana (single-edged sword) are the same as those of the tachi. The katana has a steep (kyū) mitsu-mine (three-ridged spine) — (continues on next page)
