(Continued from previous page — entry for Kuniyasu)
(The katana has a mitsu-mine spine) and is triangular in cross-section. The signature (mei) is inscribed in cursive (sō) style, and there is abundant niē (hard martensite crystals). There are oral traditions (kuden) regarding this smith.
One entry: Kunikiyo (国清) [interlinear note: Upper-middle Imperial Treasure (chūjō go-mono)] — active during the same reign. Around the Genji era (interlinear correction visible: "Gen" crossed out, replaced by "Ken"ji era). Also known as Atsutōshirō (厚藤四郎).
The sugata (form) of the tachi resembles that of Kuniyasu. The iori-mine (ridged spine) is steep (kyū). The kitae is masame (straight grain), and the ji (surface) color is dark. It is tempered in a narrow sugu-ha (straight hamon). There are kinsuji (gold-colored lines) in the jihada (surface texture), and it resembles the work of Kuniyoshi. Both the tachi and the katana have a yakitsume tip (hamon running to the very tip). The katana has a mitsu-mine (three-ridged) spine.
One entry: Arikuni (有国) [interlinear note: Upper-middle Imperial Treasure (chūjō go-mono)] — active during the same reign, the same period.
The sugata of the tachi is slender and long; the shinogi (ridge line) is narrow and high.
It resembles Kuniyasu's work. The kitae grain is not so clearly discernible and is fine. However, it is masame. Like Bichū (備中) work, there is a clear, refined hada in the ji. The ji color is dark. It is tempered in a narrow sugu-ha. There is niē, the hamon is tight and has a bluish quality. The sori (curvature) of the tachi is pronounced, and the iori-mine is steep (kyū).
One entry: Kunimitsu (国光) [interlinear note: Upper-middle Imperial Treasure (chūjō go-mono)] — active during the reign of Emperor Go-Uda (後宇多院), around the Bun'ō era (文応, 1260).
The sugata of the tachi shares the same spirit (dōshin) as all Awataguchi works. The iori-mine is steep (kyū). The kitae is masame and exceedingly fine. The well-worked, supple hada — (continues on next page)
