(The well-worked hada has a) ji color that is deep black at its base, with a bluish quality on the surface. It is tempered in a narrow sugu-ha (straight hamon). There is fine and beautiful niē (hard martensite crystals). The signature (mei) is also written in cursive (sō) style. It appears to be a work made before (the smith) went down to Sagami province (Kamakura) — that is, before leaving the capital region. The sori (curvature) of the tachi is pronounced. There are further oral traditions (kuden) regarding this.
One entry: Yoshimitsu (吉光) — active during the reign of Emperor Fushimi (伏見院), around the Shōō era (正応, 1288–1293).
The sugata (form) of the tachi is slender, with the shinogi (ridge line) built high and narrow. The kissaki (tip) also follows the overall form (sōō) of the tachi appropriately and is true to its nature (shinshō). The iori-mine (ridged spine) is slightly steep (kyū). The kitae (forging) is masame (straight grain),
and the ji (surface) color appears blue, with a purplish hue visible at its depths. It is tempered in a narrow sugu-ha (straight hamon). It is also tempered with a narrow, gentle notare (undulating hamon). The tachi has abundant niē, and the color of the hamon is strikingly white, like snow. Tachi (long swords) of this maker's work are rare. The kitae of all Awataguchi works is masame. This work (Yoshimitsu) is also masame in its kitae, but when one distinguishes the jigane (base steel) from the hamon edge, the area toward the mine (spine side) is masame. From above the hamon up to halfway through the jigane, there is itame (wood-grain pattern) kitae. Among the finest examples —
