(Continued from previous page) [At the section with the yellow hamon...] there are various and abundant nie (crystalline martensite particles). In the midare-ba (irregular temper pattern) sections, the nie is also fine and delicate; the blade is tempered with the hamon foremost in mind, applying the heat treatment (hitori) skillfully. Nevertheless, the nie is fine and beautiful. As for the character (kokoro) of the yellow hamon at the monouchi (striking area), the heat treatment is applied to an almost excessive degree, with nie held as the primary objective — thus the nie is raised up coarsely, which is the discernment of a skilled craftsman. From around the monouchi upward, yubashiri (running patterns resembling hot water) appear frequently along the mune (back ridge). Kyō-mono (Kyoto-made swords) are generally forged in masame-hada (straight grain), but in this particular work — as noted here — it is itame-hada (wood grain pattern). The ground color is also dark and bluish. In general, the secrets of how to appreciate tachi are as described above. As for the construction of the katana: the ha (edge) is wide, and the mitsu-mune (three-ridged back) is steeply iori-shaped (ridge-shaped). The nie in the midare-ba is abundant. Katana with suguha (straight temper line) have a finely forged ji (surface), with beautiful nie tempered in. The bōshi (temper pattern in the kissaki) turnback is flatter than that of Kunitoshi. However, it differs also from Kunimitsu. As noted above, grooves (hi) are favored and applied. The hi is yellowish. Further oral tradition exists. 1.
