四月から九月に至るまで、来て接種を受ける者に対しては、謝礼金（菓金）を計らって、苗漿（ワクチン液）を採取させる人に与える。この謝礼金を設ける理由は、思うに、真夏の蒸し暑い時期になると、普段から深く（種痘を）信頼している人でも、多くはためらって、なかなか来ようとしないからである。痘を接種する者がいなければ、苗漿を採取することもできなくなり、苗漿を採取できなければ、苗を継続させることもできなくなる。そこで今、謝礼金を設けることで、来た者の子どもはすでに安全を守られ、貧しい者もまた少なからず助けとなる。こうして種痘を受けに来る者が絶え間なく訪れ、良質の苗はすなわち連綿として途絶えることがない。この取り組みを行って既に長い年月が経てば、人々は皆、牛痘の方法は、盛夏であっても支障がないことを知るようになるのである。

From the fourth month through the ninth month, for those who come to receive inoculation, a suitable gratuity (*kaka-kin*, reward money) is provided to those who allow the vaccine lymph to be collected from them. The reason for establishing this gratuity is that, when the height of summer's sweltering heat arrives, even those who ordinarily hold the method in deep trust will largely hesitate and prove reluctant to come. If there are no recipients to be inoculated, there will be no lymph to collect; and if no lymph can be collected, there will be no means of continuing the vaccine strain. Now, by establishing this gratuity, the children of those who come are already protected in safety, and even the poor receive no small benefit. Thereby, those coming for inoculation arrive in a steady, unceasing stream, and the quality vaccine strain remains continuous and unbroken. Since this practice has now been carried on for a considerable length of time, people in general have come to understand that the method of cowpox vaccination presents no obstacle even during the height of summer.

*(Supplementary note)* Upon careful reflection: even within China, it is not possible to obtain the vaccine material directly from local cattle there. To offer payment so that people come willingly and thus ensure that the vaccine strain continues unbroken — this truly deserves to be called a benevolent heart of universal love.

The love that parents bear for their children is universally the same among all people.
