**[Right folio]** Those afflicted with skin disease are recognized and identified; detailed records and case documents are prepared; and when the appointed day for inoculation arrives, they proceed to the inoculation office to be on duty. All who come seeking inoculation are first made to undergo a preliminary examination, and only thereafter is the vaccine material collected. In this way, no errors are brought upon oneself. *(Supplementary note)* Upon careful reflection: the character *fū* (瘋) is none other than *fū* (風, "wind"). This is analogous to how *on* (温, "warmth") is written as *on* (瘟, "pestilence"), or *ri* (利, "benefit/flux") is written as *ri* (痢, "dysentery"). Of all the conditions I have observed and reviewed, those bearing the name "wind" (*fū*) number some 470 or more in total. Among these, leprosy (*raishitsu*) is considered the foremost of the wind diseases; hence it is named "Great Wind" (*taifū*) or "Great Hemp Wind" (*daimafu*). When "wind" is used here simply on its own, it refers to precisely this "Great Wind." According to the character dictionaries, *fū* (瘋) denotes a disease of the head (頭瘋病); but why should this condition require such avoidance and aversion? Even someone with *sōhyō* (爪瓟 — chapping or cracking of the skin), provided they are not currently manifesting active symptoms, presents no impediment. **[Left folio]** Nevertheless, one should exercise caution when collecting and using the vaccine material from such a person. Moreover, those of the *tohire* (屠者) class — butchers — are not those with whom ordinary people (*ryōmin*) would associate; yet they are still human children all the same. What parent among them could be without a heart of compassion and pity? When individuals of this class come and ask for inoculation, one should instruct a child from a poor family, offer a modest sum of money as a gratuity, and seek vaccine material from that child; or alternatively, use *yōbyō* (靨苗 — dried scab vaccine material) to inoculate a child, and thereafter transmit the fresh live vaccine (*namabyō*) in succession. Even birds and beasts, when they fall ill, are treated and healed. How much more so should this apply to the children of butchers? Is this not also one expression of the art of benevolence (*jinjutsu*)?       **Method of Drawing Out and Extracting [the Vaccine] (*Insetsu-hō*)** This method may be applied regardless of whether it is spring, summer, autumn, or winter — it is suitable at any time, following the season. As for the weather— *[continued]*
