...yet there is nothing quite like a favorable season. Nevertheless, only a few pustules appear at the inoculation site, and it is nothing like the case with *jinpō* (variolation with human smallpox), where pocks erupt all over the body and the symptoms become violently severe. Because the treatment is effective and the course of illness mild, it is not strictly necessary to adhere to seasonal timing; rather, one may carry it out as the occasion demands, and indeed there has never been a single failure from the outset. It is especially important to ensure that good-quality vaccine lymph (*kamyo*) is perpetuated without interruption. As for the various contraindications (*shoki*), one must certainly exercise caution; however, it is not necessary to be as severely strict as one must be with the serious cases of human smallpox inoculation — and there is no harm in this. One should not say that "the old method is meticulous while the new method is lax." In my private deliberations, *Tokugintō Shincho* (*Dokugyūtō Shinsho*) discusses how, in practicing this method, even the frail and weak become robust, and chronic ailments (*shukushitsu*) are likewise brought to resolution. Here I shall now record
**[Left page]**
one or two cases from personal experience. First: the child of a warrior (*buben*), age three. He was always listless and lacking in cheerfulness, with little laughter. From the very day vaccination was performed, his playfulness and merriment doubled as compared to before. Second: the child of a physician (*isei*), age three. He still had difficulty walking. On the day following the inoculation of the vaccine lymph (*nae*), he was for the first time able to stand and walk. Third: the child of a village headman, age three, and one child of a farmer — both frail and feeble (*kyojaku kyorui*), accustomed to habitually regurgitating milk (*gennyū*). After the vaccination was administered and a good pustular response (*zendō*) developed, the regurgitation of milk ceased forthwith, and the children gradually became plump and strong. Fourth: the child of a farming household, age six. At the age of two, the child was accidentally dropped on the ground, and thereafter suffered convulsions (*chikudaku*) every night. These worsened whenever a slight fever arose. Fearing the outbreak of smallpox (*tenpō / tōka*) spreading in the neighborhood, the family strongly requested that the inoculation be performed. Accordingly, it was administered. When the appointed time came, a true and proper pustular reaction (*shindō*) developed, and — *[continued]*
