**[Right page]** The mother brought the child and joyfully reported: "From the very night of the inoculation, the chronic ailment (*shukushitsu*) completely ceased, and even when a high fever (*sōnetsu*) developed, there was no abnormal change whatsoever." Next: a boy, age five. His innate constitution (*sohon*) was frail; from the ages of two and three he suffered from regurgitation of milk, and occasionally had convulsions. By the age of four, even a slight fever would inevitably bring on convulsions (*chikudaku*) and loss of consciousness. He earnestly requested the vaccination, but was firmly turned away and sent home. He came three times to make the request, and finally, being left with no choice, the vaccination was performed, and a fine pustular reaction (*bidō*) developed. On the eighth day, he suffered chills and rigors (*kansen*) and broke into a high fever, even falling into delirium (*sengo*), yet he did not convulse in the least. The niece of Yamaguchi Honryū, age two. Her innate constitution was timid and weak, her body puffy and flaccid (*kyohī*). She was accustomed to habitually regurgitating milk, and whenever she had a fever she would invariably convulse (*keichiku*) and go into opisthotonic spasm — throwing her head back with her body arched rigidly. This condition manifested in the latter part of the second month. After a month had passed, **[Left page]** the family came to request the vaccination procedure. Honryū declined and was unwilling to consent. They pleaded earnestly and would not desist, saying: "If she encounters the epidemic (*tengyō*), she will surely not be able to escape it. Even if she should die as a result of the inoculation, we have no cause for grievance." And so it was administered. She developed a smooth and fine pustular reaction (*junbi no dō*), and even when fever arose, her chronic condition did not manifest at all. Next: a girl, more than one hundred days old from birth. She had developed small sores (*shōsō*) that would not heal. After vaccination, these gradually resolved and dispersed. Next: a girl, age two. Her innate constitution (*hinjū*) was extremely weak; her facial color was sallow and withered (*iō*), her pupils were dilated (*dōshi sanda*), and the bones of her skull had not yet closed (*zurokō awazu*). She came to request the vaccination procedure. She was declined on the grounds that, according to the proper protocols, inoculation was not permissible in her case. As she persisted in her entreaties without ceasing, the needle was purified and a provisional/trial inoculation (*karitate*) was administered. From that very day there was slight fever and regurgitation of milk; on the second day she vomited yellow fluid; on the third day these symptoms gradually diminished; on the fourth day a reaction point appeared. That night — *[continued]*
