**[Right page]** Fever developed, and regurgitation of milk occurred frequently. It ceased only after the afternoon of the fifth day. The pustular reaction was exceptionally smooth and fine (*junbi*). At the time of scab-shedding (*rakuyō*), there was slight regurgitation of milk, which resolved with medicinal treatment, and afterward the child vomited no more. Next: an infant, not yet one hundred days old from birth. Breathing was labored and rapid, and the voice was mute. On this account, the vaccination procedure was sought. Medicinal treatment was applied for more than ten days with no effect. An earnest request was made to proceed with inoculation regardless. And so it was performed. A fine pustular reaction (*zendō*) developed, and the child recovered without incident. Furthermore, there were cases in which the following conditions resolved completely after vaccination: *tei'ji* (ear discharge/otorrhea), *taikō* (festering of the chin/submandibular lymphadenitis), *yorunaki* (night-crying), *kaisen* (scabies), *nessō* (heat sores), *ganpō sekiran* (red ulceration of the eyelids), and other such complaints. Next: an infant, not yet a full year old from birth. The child was wasted and weak (*ruijaku*) with asthmatic breathing, as though something were perpetually lodged in the throat. Next: a child, age two. The child was timid and weak (*kyōjaku*), with bulging of the anterior fontanelle (*shinten*). The children who had come before this one had all died at the age of two from vomiting, convulsions (*kyōkan*), and seizures. Therefore, **[Left page]** the vaccination had been declined in all these cases and not performed. The mother pleaded piteously and would not cease. And so the needle was wiped and purified, and a provisional inoculation was administered as if by a token gesture, in order to console her feelings. An explanation was given to her, saying: "This child is timid and weak — it is as though the ground itself were barren and rocky (*kyōkaku*). Even if seeds are sown now, it is difficult to expect them to sprout. Even should they sprout, unless one waits for the years to pass and the soil to grow fertile and nourishing, there would be no benefit in sowing again." In due course, both children reached the expected time and showed the reaction point (*kenten*); although the number of pustules (*kasu*) was reduced by half, they did develop a true pustular reaction (*shindō*), and in the end there were no abnormal changes. The full maturation of cowpox vesicle fluid (*gyūtō kanshō*) occurs, in all cases, around the eighth or ninth day. Therefore, the timing of re-inoculation (*shūtō no ki*) is, as a general rule (*sotsu*), set at eight or nine days. If it is done too early, the vesicle fluid lacks the strength — *[continued]*
