**[Right page]** — the vesicle fluid lacks strength; if too late, the fluid becomes overripe and loses its efficacy. When the proper time arrives, among those children who received inoculation in the previous round and whose vesicle fluid (*shōsui*) has reached full maturity, one should select those whose pustule apex is not pointed, whose base is not oblique, which are neither wrinkled nor yellowed, neither darkened nor ruptured — in sum, those where a red line (*kōsen*) encircles and encloses the pustule, drawing it together so that it is firm and full, with a color like the lustrous glow of a pearl. Furthermore, one must examine whether this child currently displays any symptoms such as: *sōrai* (skin lesions/leprosy), *ruireki* (scrofula/cervical lymphadenopathy), *taidoku* (fetal toxin/congenital syphilitic taint), *hifu ketsunetu* (cutaneous blood-heat/skin inflammation), *kankyaku* (irritability/convulsive tendency), or other ailments — and only those free of such conditions are designated *kabyō* ("fine seedling/good lymph source"). If the color is pale, dull, and loose-seeming, without a single point of hardened focus at the center, it is not suitable for use. **(Zō)** The *Kinno* (*Jinnang*) states: In general, seven or eight days after inoculation, when the fluid has become transparent and bright (*tōryō*), like clear water, this is considered the optimal sign (*kakō*). The earlier it is collected, **[Left page]** the better it will transmit infection, and the greater and more reliable the efficacy of prevention. Once it has already turned yellow and pus-like in appearance, its potency is lost and it is no longer fit for use. **(Fu)** It also states: Between the eighth and tenth day, when the fluid is clear and bright like pure water — this is precisely the right time to use it as seed (*byō*). However, those that ripen early may suffice as seedling material on the seventh day, though they are not as good in quality as those that ripen later. **(Mo)** It further states: Between the sixth and ninth day, while the central depression (*ōka*) still remains and the fluid is thin and watery in character, this is considered optimal. **(Kō/Ga)** It also states: Between the sixth and ninth day is the time (*toki*) when the pox potency (*tōryoku*) spreads throughout the entire body (*hentai*). Therefore, this is also the appropriate time to collect the seedling lymph. **(Ga)** It further states: To collect the fluid, from the side of the blister — *[continued]*
