Among married couples, there are those who are sincere and those who are not. Though this depends on the circumstances of one's upbringing, in most cases it is due to ignorance of proper conduct and the absence of parental instruction that people come to follow their hearts' desires unchecked — and there are women who come to regard their husbands as no better than servants. Yet the husband, blinded by his affection, does not reproach such arrogance and discourtesy. As days pass and months come and years accumulate, this eventually becomes the accepted norm; the wife herself no longer recognizes her own rudeness, and the husband, with the air of one who has resigned himself, continues on thinking: "Her temperament is not something that can be changed now." Such behavior is not found among those of middling station or above, but among couples of lower than middling station, seven or eight out of ten are of this sort. Nevertheless, it is not for outsiders to reproach a couple for their mutual foolishness and failings. In any case, among such people, those who are truly sincere are rare. Consequently, the reproach of licentious conduct is stirred up, and the seeds of separation are frequently sown. A wife who observes proper decorum and is not arrogant is also one who possesses a sincere heart. Therefore, if one wishes to judge whether a person is sincere or not, one should observe their everyday words and conduct. Here, in the northern part of Honjo, there lived a couple who dwelt in poverty. In their ordinary way of life, the wife honored her husband, and the husband cherished his wife; they never quarreled even slightly, and lived together in harmony. But on the night of the second day of the tenth month of last year (1855), they were caught in the great earthquake and were greatly startled. The two of them fled outside together. Fire broke out in the vicinity and the flames began to engulf their house. Since they were poor to begin with, the wife thought to at least bring out the wicker trunk in which she kept her changes of clothing. She slipped into the collapsed house and managed to drag out the carrying trunk. Since the fire had not yet reached it, the husband dashed back in to retrieve a few more household goods, leaving the wife to carry the trunk on her back. At that moment, a beam that had until then been supported by something fell with a crash upon the man. He cried out "Ah!" and was seen to collapse — he had apparently struck a vital point, for he stopped breathing on the spot. The wife was seized with shock and grief, went to him and tried to lift him up, but he showed no sign of life whatsoever. She raised her voice and called out to revive him again and again, but to no avail. While she was thus occupied, the fire drew nearer, and it was already on the verge of spreading to their house. The wife sighed in utter despair, yet even so…
