...(Even five young children would know) the name of Confucius. As the ages decline and customs grow shallow, people place themselves in the seat of their founding masters, their disciples stand in rivalry and dispute, and even though the words of their founding Confucians differ from those of Confucius, they do not bother to examine and clarify this; and even for things Confucius never said, never practiced, and never taught, they wish only to honor their founding master's words as the sole standard and model. This amounts to running counter to and diverging from Confucius himself — if one were to raise Zengzi and Mengzi from the Yellow Springs, what would they say of this?
Therefore, my own learning takes Confucius as its master; I dare not style myself by the name of any particular school or lineage, and I do not rush about along other bypaths, nor do I ingratiate myself by catering to the tastes of the times. This is because I privately take Zengzi and Mengzi as my models, and desire thereby to repay my debt to Confucius. If what I do is truly not in error, then Zengzi and Mengzi too should rightly find no fault with it. This is why I stand resolute and independent, and do not deign to concern myself with being hated by the many-tongued critics of this world.
Little did I imagine that Sōkei Sensei had, even before me, already applied the whip to precisely this same course. Yet he passed away twenty-eight years ago, and I was unable even once to receive the benefit of his mature and seasoned judgment — this is truly a matter for regret. It is rather as if one still wished to see the twists of Jingzhong's (Guanzhong's) path for oneself — and yet Jingzhong himself might also have said, "Fortunately, Bóqìng remains; there is something comparable in him." And Bóqìng has, in this very year, had the *Onsen Shōgen* carved and published...
