...one should abstain (from alcohol and sexual activity). Also, one must not bathe on an empty stomach. Bathing immediately after a meal is likewise inadvisable. Even when encouraging eating to circulate one's energy (ki), one must not overeat. One must not eat raw or cold foods. One should eat only foods that have been thoroughly cooked and softened. One must not eat heavy foods. One should eat small amounts of light fish and fowl. From time to time, one should take short walks in the neighborhood to circulate one's energy and aid digestion.
On rainy days, one should take particular care not to be exposed to the dampness of the rain. One should burn atractylodes (sōjutsu) and similar herbs to ward off malign and impure vapors (jaki). This is because during a course of spa treatment, the surface energy (hyōki) of the body is open, making one particularly susceptible to malign vapors. As for morning and evening meals, even if the timing varies somewhat, do not fix strict mealtimes; rather, eat simply in a way that is conducive to bathing—ensuring one is neither too hungry nor too full. In the words of Chen Cangqi of Tang (China): "After bathing, (the body) becomes depleted and fatigued (kyohi). According to the patient's condition, administer medicine..."
