ことにして固（もと）より野語無稽（やごむけい）のうかとし
たることにはあらず在昔（むかし）天孫（てんそん）いまた降臨（こうりん）
し玉はさる時 大巳貴尊（をゝあなむちのみこと）宿奈彦那命（すくなひこなのみこと）と
おなしくこの豊葦原中津国（としあしはらなかつくに）を領（りよう）せさ
せおはしましこの民（たみ）の夭折（ようせつ｜わかじに ）をあわれ
み玉ひて医薬（いやく）禁厭（きんゑん｜まじない ）温泉（おんせん）の法（ほう）をたて
玉ひてその疾苦（しつく）をすくひ玉ふ時に

現代語訳
ことであって、もとより根拠のない軽々しいことではない。昔、天孫がまだ降臨なさらない時代に、大己貴尊（おおあなむちのみこと）は宿奈毘古那命（すくなひこなのみこと）とともに、この豊葦原中津国を治めていらっしゃり、この国の民が若死にすることをあわれに思われ、医薬・禁厭（まじない）・温泉の法を定めて、その病苦をお救いになった。その際に、大己貴尊が御体の具合が常ならぬことがあったところ、宿奈毘古那命がすぐさまこれを温泉に入浴させなさったところ、尊の病は即座に御平癒された。これより二神は国内を巡り歩き、土地の適切なところを見て、各地の温泉をお建てになったことは、古い史書に明らかである。それよりのち、舒明・孝徳の二帝も温泉に入浴なさって御病気を療治させなさったことが、旧記に見え

...and this is by no means some idle, unfounded tale. In ancient times, before the heavenly grandchild had yet descended to earth, the deity Ōanamuchi no Mikoto, together with Sukunahikona no Mikoto, ruled over this Land of Abundant Reed Plains (Toyoashihara no Nakatsukuni), and taking pity upon the people of this land who were dying young, the two deities established the methods of medicine, ritual incantation, and hot spring therapy, and thereby saved the people from their suffering and affliction. At one point during this time, Ōanamuchi no Mikoto fell into a condition of ill health, whereupon Sukunahikona no Mikoto promptly had him bathe in a hot spring, and the deity's illness was at once cured. From this point forward, the two deities traveled throughout the land, surveying suitable locations, and established hot springs in various places—a fact that is clearly attested in the ancient histories. Following this, it is recorded in old chronicles that the two emperors Jomei and Kōtoku also bathed in hot springs to treat their ailments...
