Looking further afield to China, according to what is recorded in the Qing dynasty's *Tongzhi* (General Gazetteer), approximately one hundred and forty hot spring locations can be found across China. Moreover, there are surely any number of places that were omitted from the *Tongzhi* as well. Now, it is clear that in China, too, people were bathing in hot springs since the ancient times of the Zhou and Qin dynasties.
In the *Analects*, the words in which Zeng Dian (Zēng Diǎn) expressed his aspirations—"to bathe in the Yi River and enjoy the breeze at the Rain Altar (Wuyu)"—are explained in the commentaries of earlier Confucian scholars as: "There is a hot spring at the Yi River; this must have been a statement of his wish to bathe in it." Indeed, reasoning this through logically, it would be unlikely that he was saying he wished to go and bathe in river water in late spring in the third month. If this passage already refers to hot springs, then not only Zeng Dian alone, but the people of that era were already...
