湯治（とうし）しなすへき病症（ひようしやう）にもなさすして
或（あるい）は疾苦（しつく）をのぞく事あたはず或（あるひ）は
大害（たいかい）を招（まね）くにいたる仁者（じんしや）これを見ば
豈（あに）惻然（そくぜん）たることあらさらんや
一およそ諸国（しよこく）の温泉（おんせん）を此湯はあし
き湯此湯はよろしき湯といふことをし
るも又 温泉（おんせん）といふものはいかなる理屈（りくつ）
のものゆへにこれ〳〵の病症（ひようしよう）によろし
き理屈（りくつ）といふことを知るもまづ第一（たいいち）に
温泉（おんせん）はいかにしてわき出るといふ根本（こんほん）の
理（り）をさとり得さればかなわすおよそ温（おん）
泉（せん）の湧（わき）出るゆへを唐（もろこ）しの書（しよ）にもいろ〳〵
と理屈（りくつ）をつけていへりしかしまづは
地中（ちちう）に硫黄（いおう）ありてその硫黄（いおう）の勢（せい）にて
水をしてあたゝかならしむるといへり

一、およそ諸国の温泉について、「この湯は良くない湯、この湯は良い湯」ということを知るにも、また「温泉というものはどのような理屈によるものゆえに、これこれの病症に良いのか」という理屈を知るにも、まず第一に「温泉はいかにして湧き出るのか」という根本の理を悟り得なければ、それは叶わない。およそ温泉が湧き出る理由について、中国の書物にもいろいろと理屈をつけて述べている。しかしまずは「地中に硫黄があって、その硫黄の勢いによって水を温かくする」と言っている。しかしながら、この説は決定的なものとは言いがたく……
