子須知（しすうち）#1といふ書（しよ）にはこれらの諸説（しよせつ）と格（かく）
別（べつ）相違（そうい）せりその説（せつ）におもへらく世（よ）に温（おん）
泉（せん）は硫黄（いおう）か又は礜石（よせき）なとの熱性（ねつしやう）の石（せき）
薬（やく）あるゆへにその気（き）にて湧（わき）出るといへと
も温泉（おんせん）のある所に硫黄（いおう）礜石（よせき）も根（ね）から
なき所いくらもあり左（さ）すれは硫黄（いおう）
礜石（よせき）なとの類（るい）の勢気（せいき）にはあらす地中（ちちう）
に龍（りよう）すめばその龍（りよう）の旺気（わうき）泉（いつみ）をわか
しむるなりといへり又ある説（せつ）に暖国（たんこく）なれ
ばその地（ち）に温泉（おんせん）をわかすといへる説（せつ）も
あるにや宋（そう）の唐子西（とうしせい）が温泉（おんせん）に遊（あそ）ふ記（き）に
いへるは世（よ）に硫黄（いおう）温泉（おんせん）をわかすといへとも
こゝろみに硫黄（いおう）をいかほとも水の中に
おけともその水かつてあたゝかにも
ならねば硫黄（いおう）の気（き）にて温泉（おんせん）の湧（わく）と
いへる説（せつ）もうけがいかたし又 煖国（だんこく）なれ
現代語訳
（前頁より続き）……『子須知』という書物には、これらの諸説とは格別に相違している説がある。その説によれば、「世間では温泉は硫黄、あるいは礜石などの熱性の石薬があるゆえに、その気によって湧き出るというけれども、温泉のある所に硫黄も礜石も全くない所もいくらでもある。そうであれば、硫黄・礜石などの類の勢気によるのではなく、地中に龍が棲んでいるため、その龍の旺気が泉を沸かすのである」と述べている。またある説には、暖国（温暖な地方）であるから、その土地が温泉を沸かすのだという説もあるようだ。宋の唐子西が温泉に遊んだ記に述べているのは、「世間では硫黄が温泉を沸かすというけれども、試みに硫黄をいくらでも水の中に置いても、その水が少しも温かくもならないのであれば、硫黄の気によって温泉が湧くという説も受け入れがたい。また、暖国であるから（温泉が湧く）……」

(Continued from previous page) ...In a book called *Zixu Zhi*, there is a theory that differs markedly from all these various explanations. According to this theory: "People commonly say that hot springs well up because of the presence of thermally potent mineral substances such as sulfur or arsenolite, and that the springs are driven by the energy of these substances. However, there are many places where hot springs exist and yet where no sulfur or arsenolite is to be found whatsoever. If that is the case, then it cannot be the power and energy of sulfur, arsenolite, or their like; rather, it is because a dragon dwells within the earth, and the vigorous vital energy of that dragon causes the springs to boil." There also appears to be a theory holding that it is precisely because a region is a warm country that the land there causes hot springs to boil. In his record of an excursion to hot springs, Tang Zixi of the Song dynasty writes: "People commonly say that sulfur causes hot springs to boil, but if one experiments by placing any amount of sulfur into water, the water does not become even slightly warm. Therefore, the theory that hot springs well up through the energy of sulfur is also difficult to accept. Moreover, since it is a warm country..."
