He requested me to write a preface, but I was overwhelmed with public and private duties and had no time to take up my brush. Before I knew it, Keichū had fallen ill and passed away. Recently, Keichū's son Hakukei, following his predecessor's dying wish, sought to publish this book and again requested a preface from me. I had previously heard from Keichū that Kōyō had also written "Keikan Zuihitsu" (Casual Essays from Katsura Pavilion) and collections of poetry and prose totaling several volumes, which were to be published and transmitted to the world. Alas, how many people in this world neglect their ancestors' written works, leaving them merely to be devoured by rats and insects! Keichū was able to make his father's writings known to the world, and Hakukei has likewise been able to carry on his father's aspirations. Is this not truly praiseworthy? Although I never met Kōyō personally, this book certainly represents the lingering influence of his scholarship. Reading it now, one can perceive the depth and breadth of his learning.
