I had once read the *Hakushi Rokujō* (White's Six Categories), which states: "Those hot springs well up from the subterranean veins; the warm source ever yields its numinous fluid, which gradually becomes clear, combining the virtues of water and fire, its beneficence soaking through to all people." Furthermore, in the "Poem on the Half-Hot Springs of Zhonghe Prefecture" by Lü Yuan of the Song dynasty, it is written: "Throughout the district's borders, boiling waters abound; the springs of Chen Village are like scalding broth. Human sentiment prizes the contrast of ice and coal, and the earth's veins too have their heat and cold." Ine Jakusui had surely not read the books of Western scholars, and yet how is it that his theory seems to have been gestated from precisely these sources? This is a perspective that Kōyō may perhaps not have reached. Had he been alive today and been shown this, might he perhaps have found something in it worth adopting? I write this alongside the above, to serve as the foreword at the head of the volume. Written on the day before the Double Ninth (ninth day of the ninth month) of Kansei 6 (1794), at my modest cottage in Ryūhoku. Tamba Genkан (Mototsugu) Renpū [Seal] #1 [Seal] #2
