ゆくものもし洞穴（とうけつ）の上通（じようつう）によつて突出（とつしゆつ）
すれは火山（くわさん｜ひのもへるやま）となり火井（くわせい｜ひのいつる井）となるもし又 石（せき）

（前頁より続き）……その火が地脈に従って行き、もし洞穴の上が通じていれば突き出て火山（火の燃える山）となり、火井（火の出る井戸）となる。もし又、石気がこれに触れれば硫黄となり、礜石となる。泉源がこれを経れば、すなわち温泉となる。それゆえに、火が地中にあって土気を助けて万物を発生させる。五金・八石および諸々の珍宝は、みな火の練りによって成るものである。しかしながら、物の中で最も火に近いものは、硫黄にしくものはない。
それゆえに、水がその上を過ぎれば温泉となる。世の人々はただ地中に水があることを知って、火があってかくのごとく神異なることを知らない、と言っている。また、五行の理によれば水は火を剋するけれども、温泉の沸湯は火の気がよく水の形の中に入るからである、とも言っている。この説は議論が精確にして義理深く、卓識は前古を度越している。しかしながら、私の愚見をもってこれを見れば、その日光が地……（次頁へ続く）

(Continued from previous page) ...this fire follows the earth's veins, and if the top of a cavern happens to be open and connected, it bursts forth to become a volcano (a mountain where fire burns) or a fire well (a well from which fire emerges). If, moreover, the mineral qi (stone vapors) comes into contact with it, it becomes sulfur or arsenolite. If the source of a spring passes through this, it becomes a hot spring. For this reason, fire dwelling within the earth assists the earth's qi and causes the ten thousand things to be generated. The five metals, the eight stones, and all manner of precious treasures are formed through the tempering action of fire. Among all things, however, there is nothing that approaches fire more closely than sulfur.
For this reason, when water passes over it, it becomes a hot spring. The people of the world know only that there is water in the earth, and do not know that there is fire there, producing such wondrous and mysterious effects — so the text states. Furthermore, it states that according to the principles of the Five Phases, water overcomes fire; yet the boiling of a hot spring occurs because the qi of fire readily enters into the very form of water. This theory is precise and well-argued, its reasoning profound, and its discernment surpasses all prior thinkers.
