(Continued from previous page) ...utterly vast and formless, with no trace left to grasp, it once again roams through the space of Heaven, Earth, and the Great Void (太虚), returning to dwell within that blazing and glowing (yang qi of Heaven) and within that warmly pervasive and steaming (yang qi of Earth). At such a moment, people merely know it as yang qi, without recognizing it as the very substance of fire. In short, fire is nothing other than yang qi condensing and gathering. When it disperses, it becomes yang (qi); when it gathers, it becomes fire. When hidden, it is qi; when manifest, it becomes substance and form. Whether it is called qi or substance, whether called yang or fire—substance and function share one source (体用一源), the manifest and the subtle are without gap (顕微無間); it is one standard and one root, and was never two things to begin with. That the "Treatise on the Five Circuits" (五運大論) states that "fire roams through the space between" likewise points to precisely this principle. Therefore, within the six directions and the four extremities, there is no place devoid of yang qi, and no place devoid of fiery qi. Within stone, within metal, within wood—strike them, beat them, and there is no place from which fire will not emerge. One ought to reflect deeply and carefully upon this matter.
