一 近頃（ちかころ）京都の後藤左一（ごとうさいち）の門人（もんじん）香川太冲（かかわたちう）
のあらはすところの薬選（やくせん）といへる書（しよ）を見
侍（はへ）りしにその続編（ぞくへん）に温泉のことを
論（ろん）して温泉（おんせん）硫黄（いわう）にて沸（わ）くといふ説（せつ）を
うけかはず稲若水（いなじやくすい）の説（せつ）を引ておもへ
らく地中（ちちう）に水の筋（すち）あり火の筋あ
りその火の筋（すち）水 筋（すち）に出会（であ）へは温
泉となるといへりその説（せつ）是（ぜ）なること
は是（ぜ）なりしかれ共 甚（はなはた）疎（そ）なりまして

現代語訳
一、近頃、京都の後藤左一の門人である香川太冲が著した『薬選』という書物を読んだところ、その続編に温泉のことを論じた箇所があり、「温泉は硫黄によって沸く」という説を受け入れず、稲若水の説を引いて、次のように述べていた。「地中に水の筋（水脈）があり、火の筋（火脈）があり、その火の筋が水の筋に出会うと温泉となる」と。
その説が正しいことは正しい。しかしながら、甚だ粗略（おおざっぱ）な論であるうえに、これは游子六の説を拾ったものであって、若水が初めて唱えた説ではない。もっとも、『天経或問』は近頃（日本に）渡ってきた書物であるから、若水は万に一つ、これを見ることなく、偶然にその説と暗合（考えが一致）したのかもしれない。しかし太冲が、これが游子六の説であることを知らずに、若水が初めて唱えた説であると思い……

One item: Of late, I had occasion to read a work called Yakusen (薬選, "Selection of Medicines"), written by Kagawa Taichū, a disciple of Gotō Saichi of Kyoto. In its sequel volume, he takes up the subject of hot springs and, rejecting the theory that "hot springs are brought to a boil by sulfur," cites the view of Ina Jakusui instead, arguing as follows: "Within the earth there are veins of water and veins of fire; when a vein of fire encounters a vein of water, a hot spring is formed."
That this theory is correct is indeed correct. Yet it is an exceedingly rough and superficial account. Furthermore, this is nothing more than an idea borrowed from Yū Shiroku (游子六), and was not a theory first proposed by Jakusui. However, since the Tenkei Wakumon (天経或問, "Questions and Answers on Heavenly Principles") is a work that only recently arrived in Japan, it is possible — in one chance in ten thousand — that Jakusui had not seen it and happened to arrive independently at a view that coincidentally matched its theory. Nevertheless, Taichū, unaware that this was Yū Shiroku's theory, appears to have believed it to have been a view first advanced by Jakusui...
