黄為＿二之根＿一或曰温泉所＿レ在必白

温泉小言　序

温泉が地中にあって、熱気が蒸し上がり滾々と激しく流れ出るもの、温かいもの、熱いもの、あるいは半ば冷たく半ば温かいものが、数歩の範囲の中に混在し、水と火が共に鼎の中にあるかのようで、何が一体それをそのようにさせているのか分からない。説く者は言う、石硫黄がその根本であると。あるいはまた言う、温泉の存するところには必ず白礬・丹砂・硫黄がその根本をなしており、それらが蒸されて流れ出るのだと。

Preface to "Onsen Shōgen" (Minor Discourse on Hot Springs)

Hot springs lie within the earth, where heat rises and steams upward, gushing forth in a bubbling torrent — some temperate, some hot, some half-cold and half-warm — all within a distance of a few paces, with water and fire sharing the same vessel, yet no one knows what causes them to be so. Some theorists say that sulfur stone is their fundamental source. Others say that wherever hot springs exist, white alum, cinnabar, and sulfur must form their fundamental source, and that these substances, when steamed and heated, cause the waters to flow forth.
