...is one and the same, yet depending on the location, there are differences in pleasantness or unpleasantness of taste and odor, extreme coldness, or slight coolness. There is no difference in the innate nature of water itself, but it all depends on the particular soil and terrain. That the efficacy and toxicity of hot springs should differ is entirely the same phenomenon, he argues — and this is indeed a most reasonable theory. Since he had already grasped the essential principle that there exists a subterranean yang-fire (geothermal heat) within the earth, his words carry such depth and meaning.
One point: In the theories of the Song Confucian masters concerning the principle of human nature (性理, *xìnglǐ*), it is stated that "although people in the world differ in being foolish, wise, worthy, or unworthy, their fundamental innate nature (*bēnrán zhī xìng*) is not originally divided into two different things. The differences that emerge arise from whether one's endowed vital force (*qìbǐng*) is clear or turbid — through which one becomes either wise or foolish — but if one remains in accordance with one's fundamental innate nature, then one is in the correct state of supreme goodness and central harmony." It is by this very same principle that hot springs too, depending on whether the subterranean channels of water and hot water through which they well up contain copper, iron, silver...
