からず臭（にほひ）はたゝ硫黄（いわう）の気あるをよしとす
それもあまり甚（はなはた）しきにすくるはこのまさる
ことなり又その味或は苦（にか）く或は酸（す）く或は

現代語訳
……鉛・礬石（ばんせき）・丹砂（しんしゃ）・礜石（よせき）・砒石（ひせき）などあらゆる異なる気（かわりたる気）を受けず、異気（いき）に染まらず、自然天然の陰陽交会・水火妙合（すいかみょうごう）のうぶ（生まれつき）のままであって、その上に純陽の硫黄の気と、太陰・黄土の精とを合わせ帯びて沸き出る温泉、これを極上の良湯とする。ゆえに、鉄漿（おはぐろ）のような臭気を発するものや、その他種々の異臭のあるものはよろしくない。臭いは、ただ硫黄の気があるものをよしとする。
それも、あまりはなはだしく過ぎるのは（硫黄の気が）勝りすぎるということである。また、その味がある場合には苦く、またある場合には酸く、またある場合には渋く、種々の異味（かわりたる味）があるものは、はなはだよくない。その中でも、渋いものと酸いものとは格別によくない。そのような味の湯には、必ず小瘡（ひぜんかさ・疥癬）・梅瘡（なんばかさ・梅毒）の類の吹き出物を、（皮膚の表面から）裏へ追い込んで、治したように見せかけるものであるから、必ずその湯には浴してはならない。これは最下（いちばん悪い）の毒湯である。味はただ白湯（さゆ）を飲むように……

...lead, alum-stone (*bandseki*), cinnabar (*shinsha*), arsenolite (*yoseki*), arsenic (*hiseki*), and all other such anomalous influences — a hot spring that does not absorb any of these alien vapors, that is untainted by such foreign influences, that remains in its pristine natural state of the innate union of yin and yang, and the wondrous merging of water and fire, and that furthermore wells up bearing together the vapor of pure-yang sulfur and the essence of the Greater Yin and yellow earth — this is to be regarded as the supreme, highest-grade beneficial spring.
Therefore, springs that emit an odor like that of *ohaguro* (iron liquor used in tooth-blackening), or that carry various other strange odors, are not good. As for odor, only the presence of a sulfurous smell is to be considered desirable.
Even then, if the sulfurous odor is excessively strong, this means the sulfur is overpowering. Furthermore, springs whose water is bitter in taste, or sour, or astringent, or that carry any of various unusual tastes, are exceedingly bad. Among these, astringency and sourness are particularly bad. Springs with such tastes will invariably drive skin ailments such as *shōsō* (scabies) and *baisō* (syphilitic sores) inward beneath the skin, giving the false appearance of a cure. One must therefore never bathe in such a spring. This is the lowest grade of toxic spring. As for taste, one should bathe only in water that tastes just like plain hot water (*sayu*)...
