疥癬梅瘡一切（かいせんはいそういつさい）の諸瘡（しよそう）ある人これに浴（よく）すれ
は皆｜邪毒（じやとく）を排出（はいしゆつ）し瘀汁（おしう）を托発（たくはつ）し
諸瘡（しよそう）ことの外わかやきたちて扨は九日｜乃至（ないし）
二七日三七日の以後気味（いごきみ）よく平愈（へいゆ）す実（じつ）
に最上至極（さいしやうしごく）の良湯（りようとう）なりそれゆへ入湯の
人も近国よりあまたありされとも温泉
の理に｜達（たつ）せさる人は兎（と）や角（かく）やと評論（ひやうろん）もつけ
有馬（ありま）なとの湯よりは格別（かくべつ）おとりたる様
におもふへけれ共さにはあらす世人（せじん）はたゝ
耳（みゝ）を貴（たつと）んて目をいやしみ遠きをしたひて
近きをゆるかせにすこれその常なり浅間（あさま）

一 むかし釈（しやく）の蓮禅（れんぜん）はる〳〵と此湯に湯治（とうぢ）
にくたりてとゝまりのほるとて長門（なかと）の
壇（だん）の浦（うら）にて

現代語訳
疥癬・梅毒・その他あらゆる皮膚病を患っている人がこの湯に入浴すれば、みな邪毒を排出し、滞った膿汁を体外に発散させ、諸々の瘡（できもの）が思いのほか活発に膿み立ってきて、やがて九日ないし十四日・二十一日を経た後、気分よく完全に治癒する。まことに最上至極の良湯である。そのため入湯する人も近隣の国々から多く訪れる。しかしながら、温泉の道理に通じていない人は、あれこれと批評を加え、有馬などの湯と比べて格段に劣っているように思うかもしれないが、決してそうではない。世の人はただ評判・名声を尊んで実際の目で見ることを軽んじ、遠いものを慕って近くのものをおろそかにする。これがその人の常というものである。嘆かわしいことと言わなければならない。
かつて、僧・蓮禅がはるばるこの湯に湯治のために下ってきて、滞在を終えて帰途につく際、長門の壇の浦にて次の詩を詠んだ。
夜に遐郷（故郷）を思いて、ついに夢の中に入る
晴れわたって孤島を望めば、小さく（見える）
英語訳
Those suffering from scabies, syphilitic sores, and all manner of skin ailments who bathe in this spring will have their harmful toxins expelled and their stagnant suppurations brought to the surface. The various sores will become remarkably active, and after a period of nine days, or fourteen days, or twenty-one days, the sufferer will recover completely and in good spirits. This is truly a hot spring of the highest and most supreme quality. For this reason, bathers come from many neighboring provinces. However, those who are not versed in the principles of hot springs may offer various criticisms, thinking that it is considerably inferior to springs such as those at Arima — but this is not so. People in this world merely esteem what they hear by reputation and look down upon what they see with their own eyes; they yearn for what is distant and neglect what is close at hand. This is their common nature. It is truly lamentable.
Long ago, the monk Renzen came all the way down to this spring for a curative bath, and upon completing his stay and making his return journey, he composed the following verse at Dan-no-ura in Nagato Province:
At night, thinking of my distant homeland, I at last enter into dreams;
The skies clearing, I gaze upon a solitary island — how small it appears.
