世之浴温泉者皆不得其方故不啻
不能愈其疾也却或添一等疾帰咎

寛政癸丑（きちゅう）の夏、家祖・双桂先生の遺稿を曝（さら）す。余、その中より「温泉小言」を執りて、先人に言いていわく、「およそ世の温泉に浴する者は、皆その方（ほう）を得ざるがゆえに、ただに其の疾（やまい）を癒すことあたわざるのみならず、却って或いは一等の疾を添えて帰り、その咎（とが）を温泉に帰す。あに亦た誤らずや。今、この書を刻して以て世に伝う。その益たること、小ならざるなり」と。先人、悄然（しょうぜん）として歎ず。

**Postscript to** ***Onsen Shōgen*** **(Brief Remarks on Hot Springs)**
In the summer of the *Kansei Kichū* year [1793], I aired out the surviving manuscripts of my family founder, the late Master Sōkei. From among them I took up the *Onsen Shōgen* ("Brief Remarks on Hot Springs") and spoke to my elder [or: the late author's spirit / a senior family member], saying: "In general, those in this world who bathe in hot springs all fail to do so in the proper manner (*hō*). Therefore, not only are they unable to cure their ailments, but on the contrary some return home having added a new affliction, and then lay the blame upon the hot spring itself. Is this not also a grave error? By now engraving this book and transmitting it to the world, the benefit it shall render is by no means small." The elder [my senior] sighed quietly and with feeling.
