現代語訳
昔、けだものの芸を仕付ける水右衛門というおやじがいた。犬、猫、鼠、猿、狸、何にでも芸を仕込んで飼い置き、これを商売としていたが、また鳥や虫の類も好んで多く飼い置いていた。
しかるに、この水右衛門の裏に大きな柿の木があって、柿が多くなったところを、手飼いの猿がこの柿の木に登り、ひそかに柿を盗み食いしていた。その木の下には川が流れており、ここに蟹を一匹、かのじじいが…「次へ」
英語訳
Long ago, there was an old man named Mizuemon who made his living training animals to perform tricks. He kept and trained dogs, cats, rats, monkeys, and tanuki raccoon dogs — virtually any animal — making this his trade. He was also particularly fond of birds and insects, keeping many of those as well.
Now, behind this Mizuemon's home stood a large persimmon tree, and when the persimmons had grown plentiful, his pet monkey would climb the tree and secretly steal and eat the persimmons. Below the tree flowed a stream, and here a crab, kept by that old man... [Continued on next page]
