爺さんはこの有様を見て
大きな腹立ちを起こし
駆け出したが、猫も
狸もちょこちょこと
足早く、たちまち
どこへか逃げて行って
しまったので、爺さんは仕方
なく家へ帰って
秘蔵の雀を失くして
しまったと言って、しきりに
嘆き悲しんでいると、
飼っている犬と
兎は心根の良い
動物なので、事情を
聞いて共に
嘆き、かつ怒って言う
ことには「まことに憎い猫が
したことだ。この上は俺たち二
匹が示し合わせて
やつらを酷い目に
遭わせて、お爺さんの腹
立ちを晴らして差し上げよう」と。
犬は雀の
舌を切られた
鋏を取って
「これこれ、爺さん、
この鋏は
忠臣
蔵の由良
之助ではない
が、舌を
切られた雀
の形見、この
鋏を私が
預かり、時節を待って
雀の敵を兎と
共に捕らえた上、
耳でも鼻でも手当たり
次第に挟んで
挟み切り、お前の
心を安らかにしましょう」と
とても頼もしく
告げたのであった。

When the old man saw this terrible scene,
he flew into a great rage
and ran out, but the cat and
tanuki scurried away
swiftly on quick feet, instantly
escaping somewhere,
so the old man had no choice
but to return home.
Lamenting that he had lost
his treasured sparrow,
he grieved and sorrowed deeply.
The dog and rabbit
he kept, being animals
with good hearts,
heard the circumstances and
joined in his grief, and angrily said:
"That cat's actions are truly detestable.
Now we two
will work together
to make those villains suffer
and ease our master's anger."
The dog took up the scissors
that had cut
the sparrow's tongue
and said: "Listen, old man,
these scissors are
not Yuranosuke
from the loyal retainers'
story, but they are
a memento of the sparrow
whose tongue was
cut. I will keep
these scissors
and wait for the right moment.
After we capture the sparrow's
enemies together with the rabbit,
we'll clip their ears, noses, whatever
we can grab,
cutting and snipping to
ease your troubled heart,"
he declared most
reassuringly.
