**[From the *Tashiki-hen* (多識篇, "Compendium of Identifications")]**
**Black *Reishi*** (黒芝; local names: *Kuro-tachi*, *Kuro-shijiku-take*)
This fungus grows on rotting wood in shaded, damp locations.
*Gen-shi* (玄芝) [an alternate name]
It also appears on drainage boards (*suiryū-ita*) in one's own home — growing not from rotten wood, but sprouting through the gaps in the boards themselves.
*(Lower right)*
Obtained and drawn from life in the rear garden on the fifth day of the seventh month, year of Kinoto-Hitsuji (乙未壬, 1835), in the rain.
---
**Gosun-gan** (胡孫眼) — Japanese name: *Saru no koshikake* (Monkey's Bench / bracket fungus) — *depicted here in a double-layered specimen*
The *Yōyō Zassho* (酉陽雑俎) states: "In Daibei (代北, the northern region of present-day Shanxi province), there is a thing called *Jukei* (樹鶏, 'Tree Chicken'), shaped like an inverted cup, and commonly known as *Gosun-gan* (胡孫眼)."
I (the author) remark: The term *Jukei* ("Tree Chicken") refers to fungus (*tachi*) growing on trees, and is not limited to *Saru no koshikake* (bracket fungus) alone — it is a general term for all tree-growing fungi.
