嘉永七年（1854年）寅の年、十一月四日、諸国に大地震が発生した。その詳細を記す。朝の五ツ半時（午前九時頃）より揺れ始め、東海道筋の状況は以下の通りである。

【相模】小田原の御城下、大久保加賀守様の御領分は被害が少なく、箱根山は大半が崩れた。

【伊豆】三島宿は大きく揺れ、家々が崩れ、明神前より出火して六、七軒が焼失した。

【駿河】沼津は水野出羽守様の御城内・町家ともに大半が崩れた。原の宿は無事であった。吉原は町家・在郷ともに揺れて崩れた。富士川は津波により増水し、人馬の損害が甚だしく、岩渕も大きく揺れ出火があった。蒲原・由比の二宿は無事であった。興津は地震の上に津波が押し寄せ、家屋・蔵が引き込まれた。江尻宿も甚だしく崩れ、さらに出火して各所が焼失した。清水の湊も同様に津波があった。府中（駿府）は御城内の石垣が大きく崩れ、宮寺・町方・土蔵等まで大半が潰れ、即死者・けが人が多数出た。同刻、江川町より出火し、新吉町通り、伝馬町通り、門前町、鋳物師町、上横田町、院内町、下横田町、御台所町、八幡町の半分が焼けた。申の下刻（午後四時半頃）に鎮火した。また海手は大津波により人家が損壊した。丸子宿は無事であったが、前後の土橋が落ちた。岡部も事なし。藤枝は本田豊前守様の御城大手前より出火し、地震が甚だしく、田中の御城内から下宿まで焼けた。島田宿は大半が揺れ崩れ、大井川は津波による増水で人家各所が痛んだ。

【遠江】金谷宿も大半が揺れ、即死者・けが人が多く出火し、相良・川崎が焼失した。日坂宿は少々の損害。掛川は太田摂津守様の御城内が残らず焼け、町家が揺れ倒され、即死者・けが人が多く、大地が一尺ほど裂けて泥水を吹き出すことが甚だしかった。袋井は……（次頁へ続く）

On the fourth day of the eleventh month of the seventh year of Kaei (1854), the Year of the Tiger, a great earthquake struck many provinces. The details are recorded herein. The shaking began at around half past the fifth hour of the morning (approximately 9 a.m.), and the conditions along the Tōkaidō road were as follows:

[Sagami Province] In the castle town of Odawara, the domain of Lord Ōkubo Kaga-no-Kami suffered relatively little damage, while the greater part of the Hakone Mountains collapsed.

[Izu Province] The post town of Mishima was greatly shaken, with many houses collapsing. A fire broke out near Myōjin-mae, burning down six or seven buildings.

[Suruga Province] In Numazu, both the castle grounds of Lord Mizuno Dewa-no-Kami and the townspeople's homes were mostly destroyed. The post town of Hara was unharmed. Both the town and surrounding rural areas of Yoshiwara were shaken and collapsed. The Fujikawa River flooded due to the tsunami, causing tremendous damage to people and horses. Iwabuchi also shook greatly and caught fire. The two post towns of Kanbara and Yui were unharmed. Okitsu suffered both the earthquake and a tsunami that swept away houses and storehouses. The post town of Ejiri collapsed severely and subsequently caught fire, burning in many places. The port of Shimizu similarly experienced a tsunami. In Fuchū (Sunpu), the stone walls of the castle grounds collapsed extensively; shrines, temples, townhouses, and earthen storehouses were mostly destroyed, with many killed instantly and many others injured. At the same time, a fire broke out in Egawa-chō and spread through Shinyoshi-chō, Tenma-chō, Monzen-chō, Imōji-chō, Kamiyokota-chō, In'nai-chō, Shimoyokota-chō, Odaidokoro-chō, and half of Hachiman-chō before dying down during the lower quarter of the Hour of the Monkey (around 4:30 p.m.). The coastal areas also suffered damage to homes from the great tsunami. The post town of Mariko was unharmed, though the earthen bridges before and after it collapsed. Okabe also suffered no damage. In Fujieda, a fire broke out from the main gate of the castle of Lord Honda Bizen-no-Kami, with the earthquake causing severe damage; the area burned from inside the castle grounds of Tanaka down to the lower post town. The post town of Shimada was mostly shaken and collapsed, and the Ōigawa River flooded due to the tsunami, damaging homes throughout the area.

[Tōtōmi Province] The post town of Kanaya was also mostly shaken, with many killed instantly and many injured; fires broke out, and Sagara and Kawasaki burned down. The post town of Nissaka suffered minor damage. In Kakegawa, the entire castle of Lord Ōta Settsu-no-Kami burned down, townspeople's homes were toppled by the earthquake, many were killed or injured, the earth cracked open about one shaku (approximately 30 cm) and vigorously spouted muddy water.
