The earth crumbled and shook, and even the trees and grass withered and fell. Then, on the night of the seventh day, the Agatsuma and Gunma forces secretly went around to the Ōzasa Pass, and attempting to climb up and attack, they scrambled up narrow paths and steep cliffs here and there, making their way with great difficulty until they stealthily reached the area of Kambara. Just as they assembled in full force and were arranging their positions to launch an assault, unexpectedly, Manzawa and Shirane — who had prepared for this very moment — fired off their stone mortars and unleashed the "Kunizushi" (country-destroying cannon).
Ambush forces stationed in various places rose up all at once, and unleashing their chain-fire artillery, they attacked relentlessly. The Tōkai forces holding position at Asama sent up great signal fires, pouring down [fire and debris] enough to dry up even the tides of the southern seas, raining mud from the sky. Heaven trembled to the thirty-three celestial realms above, and the earth shook to the depths of Naraku and Abi (the lowest Buddhist hells) below. Heaven shattered, the earth crumbled, and it seemed as though this must be the moment of the great conflagration of cosmic destruction The common people and peasants of Shinshū and Jōshū fled and wandered about in confusion with only their feet to rely upon — a terrifying state of affairs. The Asama forces...
