漸と微命（ビメイ）を存（ナガ）らへしものも或は夫は死て鰥（ヤモメ）

かろうじて命をつないだ者たちも、ある者は夫が死んで男やもめとなり、妻が死んで女やもめとなり、父母と離ればなれになって孤児となり、働き盛りの子供を失って年老いた親だけが生き残っているという有様で、嘆きの種は数え切れず、悲しみに身を焦がしている。その上、住む場所さえも失い果て、頼るべき所もなく、飢えと渇きで、そこに倒れ、あちこちで伏して死ぬ者が非常に多かった。信州は砂の国に変わってしまったが、それだけでなく天地の変化が尋常ではなく、諸国すべて実りがなかった。文月（七月）の初めまでは大麦一俵が南鐐一片、米一俵が一分二百文ほどで売買されていたが、中秋（八月）の末になると、諸方の天狗や悪鬼どもの仕業なのか、諸国の穀物はすべてせり上がりとなり、買い占めによって次第に高値になった。金十両で大麦二十五俵になったかと思うと、あっという間に十二俵になってせり上がり、金一両で米一石六斗ほどの安値になったかと思うと、たちまち七斗から四斗になり、ついには三斗三、四升までせり上がった。

Those who barely managed to survive faced countless sorrows: some became widowers after their wives died, others became widows after their husbands died, children were separated from their parents and became orphans, and elderly parents lost their children in the prime of life and were left alone. On top of this, they lost even their homes and had nowhere to turn for help. Starving and thirsting, many collapsed and died where they fell. Shinano Province was transformed into a land of sand, but beyond that, the changes in heaven and earth were extraordinary, and no province had any harvest. Until early in the seventh month, one hyō of barley traded for one piece of silver, and one hyō of rice cost about one bu and 200 mon. But by the end of mid-autumn (eighth month), perhaps due to the machinations of tengu and evil spirits from various quarters, grain prices in all provinces began to soar, and through hoarding, prices rose steadily. What had been 25 hyō of barley for 10 ryō of gold quickly became 12 hyō. Rice that had been about 1 koku 6 to per ryō of gold suddenly became 7 to, then 4 to, and finally rose to just 3 to 3-4 shō.
