万八伝
万八は筑州（ちくしう）の人也。父は滅法（めつほう）弥八。母は欺城（だましろ）屋の契情（けいせい）
虚言（そらごと）。大晦日の月の前に四角な卵（たまご）を呑（のむ）と夢みて。
天甫（てんぽ）八百年 乙力（をつりき）の秋六月 冬至（とうじ）の日万八を産（うめ）り。万
八幼名（おさなな）は千三（せんみつ）。□長□□【成長（せいちやう）して】弥次郎と云。天性（てんせい）聡明（そうめい）
にして才智 鳥獣（とりけもの）にもまされり。この故に鳥獣

万八伝
万八は筑州（筑前国）の人である。父は滅法弥八。母は欺城屋の遊女虚言。大晦日の夜に四角な卵を飲むという夢を見て、天甫八百年乙力の秋六月冬至の日に万八を産んだ。万八の幼名は千三。成長して弥次郎と名乗った。生まれつき聡明で才知は鳥獣にも勝っていた。そのため鳥獣を生け捕りにすることは極めて上手であった。ある年の正月三日があった年に中国に渡り、数転峯に登って野鉄砲を放って虎を獲った。その数は一石六斗二升八合であった。帝王がその信じがたいことに感動され、著猪羅国の親玉に封じられた。この時毛唐人が歌って言うには、「著猪羅の出しは日本の親玉でございます」と。東夷・南蛮・北狄・西戎を遍歴し、嘘を筑紫の海に千年、嘘を筑波の山に千年、東海道に九千歳、浦々を吹いて回ること三年と三か月、九十九夜にもなったので、生年が積もって万八歳となった。そこで自分の名前にちなんで万八と改名した。率直な話なので一つも偽りがない。

The Biography of Man'hachi
Man'hachi was a person from Chikushū (Chikuzen Province). His father was Meppō Yahachi. His mother was a courtesan named Kyogen (Falsehood) from the Damashiro-ya brothel. She dreamed of swallowing a square egg on New Year's Eve, and gave birth to Man'hachi on the winter solstice day in the sixth month of autumn in the year Tenpō 800, Otsu-riki. Man'hachi's childhood name was Senmitsu (One in a Thousand Lies). When he grew up, he was called Yajirō. He was naturally intelligent and his wit surpassed even that of birds and beasts. Therefore, he was extremely skilled at capturing birds and beasts alive. One year, on the third day of the first month, he crossed over to China, climbed Sutenho Peak, and shot tigers with a wild rifle. The number he caught was one koku, six to, two shō, and eight gō. The emperor was moved by such unbelievable deeds and enfeoffed him as the boss of Chochorara Country. At this time, the foreign barbarians sang: "The export from Chochorara is Japan's boss." He traveled through the eastern barbarians, southern barbarians, northern barbarians, and western barbarians. He spread lies by the sea of Tsukushi for a thousand years, lies on Mount Tsukuba for a thousand years, and on the Tōkaidō for nine thousand years, blowing around various harbors for three years and three months, lasting ninety-nine nights. His age accumulated to 10,008 years old. Therefore, he changed his name to Man'hachi after his age. Since this is a straightforward tale, there is not a single falsehood in it.
