現代語訳
万八が言うには、雀を捕るには、
庭の窪みに酒を
こぼし、また
酒飯をたくさん
庭の内に
まき散らして
置けば雀が
おびただしく
集まり酒
飯をしたたか
食う。さて、かの
酒を水と思い
飲むほどに
だんだん酔いが回
って多くの
雀が足
元はよろよろと
立つこともならぬ
ようになるのを見すまし
榧や棗などの類を
ぱらぱらと
まき散らせば
雀どもは
その榧や棗
を枕に
してこころ
よく寝入り
ます。皆々
いびきをか
くのを合図
に
高箒
にて
掃き寄せ
て
籠の中へ
ぱらぱら
と
英語訳
Man'hachi says that to catch sparrows:
Spill sake in
the hollows of the garden,
and also scatter
plenty of sake-soaked rice
throughout the
garden.
If you do so, sparrows will
gather in great numbers
and eat the sake-
soaked rice heartily.
Now, thinking the
sake is water, they
drink it, and
gradually the intoxication spreads
through many
sparrows, making their
legs so unsteady that they
can barely
stand. Watch for this moment,
then scatter
kaya nuts, jujubes and such
about.
The sparrows will
use those kaya nuts and jujubes
as pillows
and peacefully
fall asleep.
When they are all
snoring,
use this as your signal
to sweep them up
with a tall broom
and dump them
into a basket.
