渡邊清水男という者がいた。六月十五日の夕暮れに、ある近所の友人と茶を飲みながら足を伸ばして談笑していたところ、午後八時頃、沖合いで突然、雷のような轟音が聞こえた。二人は期せずして話を中断し、しばらく耳をそばだてていると、友人が「これは津波だ」と言って慌てて立ち上がったので、渡邊も共に飛び出して沖合いを眺めたところ、これはどうしたことか、山のような大波が渦を巻きながら、すでに目の前に迫ってきていた。「大変だ、一大事だ」と言う間もなく、渡邊はともかくも皆に知らせようと、自分の家に帰ることは後回しにして「津波だ、津波だ」と村中を叫びながら走り回り、そうして飛ぶように自分の家に帰ってみると、家はすでに一面水に浸されて、妻子が叫び声を上げている真っ最中だった。狂気のように中へ飛び込んだが、時を移さず家はメリメリと打ち壊され、渡邊は梁に挟まれたまま水中でもがき、もはやこれまでと覚悟したところ、大波が再び襲い来て、これが幸いして渡邊は梁の間を抜け出し、すぐさま傍にあった木の上によじ登り、自らはかろうじて命を救ったものの、哀れにも妻子四人は目の前で怒涛の中に巻き込まれて亡くなってしまった。
このような次第であったから、清水村の住民は渡邊の叫び声を聞いて初めて飛び出し、いち早く両側の山の上へ逃れて命を全うしたものが多いという。
渡邊の話によれば、津波襲来の様子は一度に打撃してきたのではなく、最初は低く、次第に水かさを増し、途中で二、三度、巨大な波が激しく押し寄せて、ついにこの惨状を招いたものだという。このような状況であったため、最初は家屋は破壊されずにそのまま浮き上がり、漂流して両山の間へ運ばれ、そこで大波をまともに受けたために一度に悉く倒壊したものだという。
●歌津村
○八十歳の老婆が路傍をさまよう 歌津近辺に八十余歳の老婆がただ一人生き残り、子も孫も家も親類もすべて失ったものがいた。行く先もないため、ボロ布をまとったまま風呂敷包みらしきものを背負って、とぼとぼとさまよい歩く様子は、卒塔婆小町の昔話も偲ばれ、

○公務のために愛児を失う 伊里前駐在所勤務の巡査・八島平一氏は、当日、被災民の救護に奔走中、いつのまにか自分の住宅が流され、二度目の波に打ち上げられた時に初めてそのことに気づき、大いに驚いて「家族はどうなったか」と急いで駆けつけてみると、妻は幸いにもその中に生存していたが、八歳の愛児は流失して遺体さえ見当たらないという。
●小泉村
○潮水が五丈の高地に達する 小泉村の北に援子川がある。この辺りは一面の高地であり、海面から約四丈ほどの高さがあり、電線がその上に架かっている。海面から電線までの高さは優に五丈を超えていた。津波の際、潮水はここまで達したと見え、電線は泥にまみれて藁がそれに引っかかっていた。里人は海岸にある十数間の松の木を指さして言った。「潮の高さは実に松の梢と同じほどでした」と。
一人の少女が、茫然として倒れた木の根元に佇んでいるのを見て、村の名を尋ねると、答える気配すらない。さらに二回ほど尋ねると、ようやく首を上げて「なんと言うか、忘れてしまいました」と答えた。また試みにその名前を尋ねると、相変わらず「忘れてしまいました」と答えた。ああ、なんとも惨ましいことか。彼女はこの非常な出来事のために脳に大きな打撃を受けて、このように健忘症になってしまったのであろうか。
一人の男がいて、蓬髪で顔は黒ずみ、その姿はまるで鬼のようだった。彼が語るところを聞けば曰く、「私はこの先の御嶽村大字馬込の遠藤永次と申します。私の娘のとりと申す者を小泉の三浦亀次という人の家に奉公に出しておりましたが、それが津波にさらわれまして（泣きながら）、私は少しも恨みません。亀次さんの家でも家族十人のうち六人が亡くなられまして……私の娘だけが亡くなったわけではありませんから、亀次さんを恨みません（また泣きながら）。ただ遺体だけでも見つけたいと思いまして、今日で七日、この浜へ参っております。今日は七日目ですから、仏様のお蔭で浮き上がっているかと思いまして……見つかりません（このとき肩に掛けていた風呂敷を降ろして）私は今日、亀次さん（の家）に……

There was a man named Watanabe Shimizuo. On the evening of June 15th, he was relaxing and chatting over tea with a nearby friend, when around eight o'clock in the evening a sudden tremendous roaring sound, like thunder, was heard from offshore. Both men fell silent without any prior agreement and strained their ears; the friend said, "That's a tsunami!" and hurriedly stood up. Watanabe also rushed outside with him and looked out to sea — and what a sight it was: a mountain of great waves churning in a whirlpool was already bearing down directly upon them. Before he could even cry out "This is an emergency!", Watanabe put aside the thought of returning to his own home first, and ran through the entire village shouting "Tsunami! Tsunami!" to warn everyone. Then he flew back to his own house, only to find it already submerged under water, with his wife and children in the midst of screaming for their lives. He leaped inside as though mad, but at that very moment the house cracked and groaned and was smashed to pieces. Watanabe was pinned by a beam and struggled in the water, gasping for breath and resigning himself to death — but then another great wave came crashing in, and by this stroke of fortune, Watanabe was dislodged from between the beams. He immediately clambered up a nearby tree and barely saved his own life, but alas, his wife and four children were swept before his eyes into the raging torrent and perished.
Because of these events, it is said that the residents of Shimizu Village, hearing Watanabe's shouts, were the first to run out and flee up the mountains on either side, and many thereby saved their lives.
According to Watanabe's account, the tsunami did not strike all at once; at first the water was low and rose gradually, with two or three massive surges in the middle, before finally bringing about this catastrophic devastation. Because of this gradual onset, the houses at first were not destroyed but floated up intact and drifted away, carried between the two mountains — and it was there, when struck full-force by a great wave, that they were all at once reduced to rubble.

Near Utatsu, there was an elderly woman of over eighty years who alone had survived, having lost all her children, grandchildren, home, and relatives. With nowhere to go, she shuffled along wrapped in rags, a bundle in a *furoshiki* cloth tied to her back, tottering and wandering aimlessly — a sight that evoked the old tale of *Sotoba Komachi*, and

**○A Police Officer Loses His Beloved Child in the Line of Duty**
Constable Yashima Heiichi, stationed at the Irimae police post, was rushing about rescuing disaster victims on that day when — without his even noticing — his own home was swept away. It was only when the house was struck by the second wave that he first realized what had happened. Greatly alarmed, he hurried to find his family: his wife had fortunately survived inside the house, but his beloved eight-year-old child had been carried away, and not even the body could be found.

**○Floodwaters Reach a Height of Five *Jō***
To the north of Koizumi Village flows the Enoko River. The surrounding area is entirely high ground, standing at nearly four *jō* above sea level, with telegraph wires strung above — the height from sea level to the telegraph wires was comfortably over five *jō* (approximately 15 meters). During the tsunami, the floodwaters appear to have reached as high as the telegraph wires, which were caked in mud and had straw tangled around them. A local resident, pointing to pine trees of ten-odd *ken* standing along the shore, said: "The height of the water was truly level with the tops of those pine trees."
A young girl was seen standing vacantly at the base of a fallen tree. When asked what village she was from, she showed no sign of responding. When asked again two more times, she finally raised her head and answered, "What it's called... I've forgotten." When her own name was then asked, she likewise replied, "I've forgotten." Ah, how utterly pitiful! Had this extraordinary catastrophe delivered such a shock to her mind that she had been reduced to this state of amnesia?
There was also a man, his hair disheveled and his face darkened and drawn, his appearance very nearly that of a demon. Listening to what he had to say, he spoke as follows: "I am Endō Eiji from Magome, Mitake Village, just up ahead. I had placed my daughter — a girl called Tori — in service at the home of a man called Miura Kameji in Koizumi, and she was swept away by the tsunami." (Weeping.) "I bear no grudge against anyone. At Kameji's household, six out of ten family members were taken as well... it was not only my daughter who was lost, so I bear no grudge against Kameji." (Weeping again.) "I only wish I could find even the body. Today makes seven days that I have been coming to this beach. Today being the seventh day, I thought that perhaps, through the grace of the Buddha, she might have floated up... She has not been found." (At this point, he lowered the *furoshiki* bundle from his shoulder.) "Today I came to Kameji's house..."
