●大谷村
大谷村の産佐藤某とて当年（たうねん）七十三の老媼（らうおう）あり其語る所を聞くに
海嘯の夜十歳の孫（まご）を抱（だ）いて床に就きしが無邪気（むじやき）なる小供の可愛
さ何時（いつ）の間（ま）に孫はスヤ〳〵と眠（ねむ）りぬ妾は老人（らうにん）のこととて速かにね
つく能はずして兎や角と昔（むかし）の事を思ひ出しつゝありしに俄（には）かに
戸障子を蹴破（けやぶ）りて躍り込みし大波（おほなみ）にアと驚く間もあらばこそ妾
は忽ち潮（うしほ）に捲（ま）き流（なが）され家と共に七八間｜漂（たゞよ）ひしが此時孫の小供は
畳と畳との間にはさまり乍（なが）ら手を挙げて『婆（ばゞ）や助（たす）けて』と声を限
りに叫（さけ）びたり闇（やみ）の中にすかして彼児を見し時其｜周（まは）りにある畳（たゝみ）恰
かも井側（ゐどがは）の如く見えたれば妾（わらは）は彼児が井の中に陥（おちゐ）りたるにはあ
らずやと疑（うたが）ひぬ兎も角して助（たす）けやらん者をと心のみは逸（はや）れども
老（おひ）の身（からだ）の甲斐なき上に己も種々の木材（もくざい）に圧（あつ）せられて進退自由な
らざれば『命（いのち）計（ばか）り持（も）ちてよ』と二度三度｜繰返（くりかへ）す其間に潮水（てうすい）はサッ
ト高（たか）まり来りて口鼻（くちはな）の辺迄来れり左れど之を避くべき術（すべ）なけれ
ば毒水（どくすい）とも知らず薬水（やくすい）とも知らず四口五口ガブ〳〵と嚥（の）み下（くだ）し
ぬ此の時は気も半ば狂乱（きやうらん）して辺（あた）りに何事のありしやは別（わか）らず唯
妾は盲亀（もうき）の浮木（ふぼく）に上りし如く何時の間にか柱（はしら）の上（うへ）に取りつきて
助けを呼び居りぬ是れより先き海嘯（つなみ）の来りし時｜娘（むすめ）の聟（むこ）は直ちに
表の方へ飛び出でしがやがて馳（は）せつけ声（こえ）を便りに屋根（やね）の茅（かや）を掻
き除け掻き除けて妾を初め屋根の下に埋（う）もれたる者五人迄を助（た）
け上げたり波（なみ）の退（ひ）きたる後妾は大枡（おほます）に一杯 （五升）の泥水（どろみづ）のを吐（は）き

階上村は大蛇（おほじや）、乙越（おつこし）、柳、小舟渡（こふなと）の四｜字（あざ）より成る三戸郡｜極南（きょくなん）の
漁村（ぎょそん）にして二十一名の惨死者（さんしゝや）あり、当日小舟渡の漁夫（ぎょふ）沖合（おきあひ）にて
漁業（ぎょぎやう）し居たるもの一時｜船（ふね）の水上に膠（かう）せしに驚き怪しと思ふ間に
陸地（りくち）に当り砲声（ほうせい）の如きものを聞きたれば直（たゞ）ちに引返し来りし処
夥しく材木（ざいもく）の流れ来るに逢（あ）ひ始（はじめ）て其海嘯なりし事を知しといふ
●唐桑村
○唐桑村にては海嘯｜襲来（しふらい）せし時の状况（じやうけう）を気仙沼警察署長上田景
安氏の談話（だんわ）によりて記（しる）さんに曰く
十五日夜八時卅分、巨礟（きょほう）の音の如きもの轟然（がうぜん）として二度迄聞
へたり、当地（たうち）は其後｜何事（なにごと）もなかりしかば本官（ほんくわん）等は只｜遠雷（えんらい）の響
とのみ思ひ居たりスルト十｜時（じ）過（すぎ）にもあらん唐桑より一人の男
来り『唐桑（からくは）に水が増しましたと』の報告（ほうこく）を得たりされば何程位
の増水（ましみづ）にや分明（ぶんめい）ならず其男に推問（すゐもん）すれば只キヨト〳〵として
少しも要領（えうりやう）を得ず兎角する程に階上村｜役場（やくば）より急使（きうし）来り海嘯
あり人畜（じんちく）の死傷｜無算（むざん）との報告ありければ巡査部長を唐桑に派（は）
遣（けん）し本官は直に階上（はしかみ）に向ひ救護（きうご）の手続（てつゞき）を了へ更らに唐桑に行
きしに何ぞ図らん其の損害（そんがい）は非常（ひじやう）にして目も当てられぬ有様（ありさま）
なり依て急に救護（きうご）の手続をなし本県（ほんけん）への報告等をなせり、唐
桑｜駐在所（ちうざいじょ）巡査の談話（だんわ）によれば当夜の浪（なみ）は六丈余の高（たか）さなりし
と翌朝（よくちやう）本官が再び出張せし時、見るも惨（いた）ましき様にて話（はな）すも
涙（なみだ）の種なるが、破壊（はくわい）家屋（かおく）の下に圧伏（あつぷく）され居る罹災者の尚生（なほい）き
存（なが）らへるが苦（くる）しき声｜絞（しぼ）り上（あ）げ助を呼ぶあり見れば顔色（かほいろ）は青黒
色に変り髪（かみ）は振（ふ）り乱（みだ）して悪鬼（あくき）羅刹（らせつ）の如く早々〳〵と啼（な）き叫（さけ）ぶ
より急に鋸（のこぎり）を取寄せ圧木（あつぼく）を引斫（ひきゝ）らんとするも中々に析れず其
内に絶命（ぜつめい）せしも五六人ありき惨（さん）といふべきなり不思議（ふしぎ）の命を
取留（とりと）めたるは佐藤栄次郎の妻（つま）と田村芳之助｜夫妻（ふさい）のものなり、

●大谷村
大谷村の出身で佐藤某という、今年七十三歳の老女がいた。その語るところを聞くと：
「海嘯の夜、十歳の孫を抱いて床に就いたが、無邪気な子供の可愛さよ——いつの間にか孫はすやすやと眠ってしまった。私は老人のこととてすぐには眠れず、あれこれと昔のことを思い出していたところ、突然、戸や障子を蹴破って飛び込んできた大波に、あっと驚く間もなく、私はたちまち潮に巻き流されて、家ごと七、八間ほど漂った。その時、孫の子供は畳と畳の間に挟まれながら手を上げて『おばあちゃん、助けて』と声の限りに叫んでいた。暗闇の中でその子を見た時、その周りにある畳がまるで井戸の囲いのように見えたので、私はあの子が井戸の中に落ちてしまったのではないかと疑った。なんとかして助けてやろうと心は焦れども、老いた身体の情けなさに加え、自分もいろいろな木材に押さえられて身動きできなかったので、『命だけは持ちこたえよ』と二度三度繰り返した。その間に潮水はさっと高まってきて口や鼻の辺りまで来た。しかしそれを避ける術もなかったので、毒水とも薬水とも知らず、四口五口ごくごくと飲み下した。この時は気も半ば狂乱して、周りに何が起きているかもわからず、ただ私はいつの間にか柱の上にしがみついて助けを呼んでいた。それより先、海嘯が来た時、娘の婿はすぐに表の方へ飛び出したが、やがて駆けつけて声を頼りに屋根の茅を掻き除けながら、私をはじめ屋根の下に埋もれた者を五人まで助け上げた。波が引いた後、私は大枡に一杯（五升）の泥水を吐き出した。私が今回命を取り留めたのは、全て婿の力である。私は毎日両手を合わせて婿を拝んでいる。」
と、ぽろぽろと涙を流しながら語った。

●階上村
階上村は大蛇、乙越、柳、小舟渡の四つの字からなる三戸郡最南端の漁村であり、二十一名の惨死者が出た。当日、小舟渡の漁師が沖合で漁をしていたところ、突然、船が水上に膠着したように動かなくなったのに驚き、不思議に思っている間に、陸地の方から砲声のようなものが聞こえたので、直ちに引き返してきたところ、夥しい材木が流れてくるのに出くわし、初めてそれが海嘯であったことを知ったという。

●唐桑村
○唐桑村において海嘯が襲来した時の状況を、気仙沼警察署長・上田景安氏の談話によって記すと以下の通りである。
「十五日夜八時三十分、大砲の音のようなものが轟然として二度まで聞こえた。当地はその後何事もなかったので、私どもはただ遠くの雷の響きとのみ思っていた。すると十時過ぎにもなろうか、唐桑から一人の男が来て、『唐桑に水が増しました』との報告を受けた。しかしどの程度の増水なのか分からず、その男に詳しく問いただしても、ただきょとんとするばかりで少しも要領を得ない。やがて階上村役場から急使が来て、海嘯があり、人畜の死傷者が数え切れないほどいるとの報告があったので、巡査部長を唐桑に派遣し、私は直ちに階上に向かい救護の手続きを済ませ、さらに唐桑へ行ったところ、何とその損害は非常に大きく、目も当てられない有様であった。そのため急いで救護の手続きをとり、本県への報告などをおこなった。唐桑駐在所の巡査の談話によれば、当夜の波は六丈余りの高さだったとのことである。翌朝、私が再び出張した時、見るも痛ましい様子で、話すも涙の種であったが、破壊された家屋の下に押しつぶされたまま、なおも生き存えた被災者が苦しそうな声を絞り上げて助けを呼んでいる。見れば顔色は青黒色に変わり、髪は振り乱して悪鬼羅刹のごとく、しきりに泣き叫ぶので、急いで鋸を取り寄せて圧し掛かっている木材を引き鋸で切り取ろうとするも、なかなか切れない。その間に絶命した者が五、六人いた。惨というほかない。不思議にも命を取り留めたのは、佐藤栄次郎の妻と田村芳之助夫妻の者である。」

●Ōtani Village
In Ōtani Village there was an old woman surnamed Satō, seventy-three years of age this year. Hearing what she had to say:
"On the night of the tsunami, I went to bed holding my ten-year-old grandchild. The dear innocence of a child — before I knew it, the grandchild had drifted off to sleep. Being elderly, I could not fall asleep quickly, and lay there lost in memories of long ago, when suddenly a great wave burst through the doors and shoji screens and crashed in. Before I could even cry out in surprise, I was instantly swept up by the tide and drifted some seven or eight ken along with the house. At that moment, my grandchild was caught between tatami mats and, raising a hand, was crying out with all their voice: 'Grandma, help me!' When I peered through the darkness at the child, the surrounding tatami mats looked just like the frame of a well, and I feared the child had fallen into a well. My heart urged me to help somehow, but my aged body was of little use, and I myself was pinned under various pieces of timber and could not move freely — so I called out again and again, two and three times: 'Just hold on to your life!' Meanwhile the flood water rose sharply, reaching up to my mouth and nose. But there was no way to avoid it, whether it was poison or medicine I did not know — I gulped it down four or five great mouthfuls. At this point my mind was half-delirious, and I had no idea what was happening around me. All I knew was that somehow I had clung to the top of a pillar and was calling for help. Before this, when the tsunami had come, my daughter's husband had immediately dashed out to the front, but he soon came running back, following the sound of voices, and pulling away the thatch of the roof layer by layer, he rescued me and four others who were buried beneath the roof. After the waves receded, I vomited out a large measure (five shō) of muddy water. That I survived this time is entirely due to my son-in-law's efforts. Every day I press my hands together in prayer and bow down to him."
So she told her story, tears streaming down her face.

●Hashikami Village
Hashikami Village consists of four hamlets: Ōja, Otsukoshi, Yanagi, and Kofunato — the southernmost fishing village of Sannohe District — and suffered twenty-one fatalities. On that day, fishermen from Kofunato who were working offshore were startled when their boats suddenly became stuck fast on the water's surface as if glued down. While they were puzzling over this, they heard something like the sound of a cannon from the direction of land, and immediately turned back. On their way, they encountered vast quantities of timber floating toward them, and it was only then that they realized it had been a tsunami.

●Karakuwa Village
○Regarding the conditions at the time the tsunami struck Karakuwa Village, as recounted in the testimony of Ueda Keian, Chief of the Kesennuma Police Station:
"At 8:30 on the night of the 15th, something like the sound of a massive cannon was heard thunderously, twice. As nothing further occurred in our area, my officers and I assumed it was only the sound of distant thunder. Then, at around past ten o'clock, a man came from Karakuwa with a report that 'the water has risen in Karakuwa.' However, the extent of the flooding was unclear; when we questioned the man closely, he only stared blankly and could give us no useful information at all. While we were thus occupied, an urgent messenger arrived from the Hashikami Village office with a report that a tsunami had struck and that the number of human and livestock casualties was beyond count. I therefore dispatched the sergeant to Karakuwa, while I myself immediately headed to Hashikami to complete the rescue arrangements, and then proceeded further to Karakuwa — only to find, to my great dismay, that the damage was extraordinary and the scene was too terrible to behold. I hurriedly arranged rescue measures and submitted reports to the prefectural authorities. According to the testimony of the constable at the Karakuwa police post, the waves that night reached a height of over six jō. When I went out again the following morning, the sight was utterly heartbreaking — too painful even to put into words. Disaster survivors who were pinned beneath the wreckage of collapsed houses, yet still alive, were wringing out anguished cries calling for help. Their faces had turned a bluish-black color, their hair disheveled, and they wailed and screamed like demons and rakshasas. We hurriedly sent for a saw to cut away the timber pressing down upon them, but it was no easy task to cut through. In the meantime, five or six people perished. It was truly a tragedy. Among those who miraculously survived were the wife of Satō Eijirō and the couple Tamura Yoshinosuke."
