なん現に当町の有志者倉田安之助氏の如き此声（このこえ）に依り蒼皇（さうくわう）逃走

○巨砲を海中（かいちう）に聴く 大海嘯当日大槌町の漁師（りやうし）遙かの沖合に
て漁業に従事（じゆうじ）せしが午後六時とも覚しき頃大洋中に於て巨砲（きょほう）の
響を聴きしかば眸（ひとみ）を凝（こら）して四方を見渡したれど茫々（ぼう〳〵）たる蒼波の
外大艦を見ざりしかば奇異（きゐ）の思ひを為しながら帰航（きかう）し来りしに
果然（くわぜん）此大海嘯あり漁師は一命を助かり居り彼の巨砲（たいほう）の如き響こ
そ海底に大異状ありし時にぞ大海嘯の原因（げんゐん）も茲に在りしならん
と震摺（しんせふ）せり

（馬場は）家屋の屋根を突き抜けて、命が助かる幸運を得たが、他の花火師・人夫・子供たちは海の藻屑となって死に、遺体すら行方不明となった。
この時、「津波！津波！」と叫んだ声は、はるか離れた場所で見物していた人々に大きな注意を促した。このおかげで命を拾った者が極めて多かったという。現に当町の有志者である倉田安之助氏も、この声によって慌てて逃走し、助かったと言われている。
○沖合で巨砲のような音を聞く 大海嘯当日、大槌町の漁師がはるか沖合で漁業に従事していたが、午後六時頃と思われる時刻に、大洋の中で巨砲のような響きを聞いたため、目を凝らして四方を見渡したが、広大な青波の中に大きな艦船は見えなかった。不思議に思いながら帰港してみると、果たしてこの大海嘯が起きていた。漁師は一命をとりとめ、あの巨砲のような響きこそ、海底に大きな異変があった時のものであり、大海嘯の原因もそこにあったのだろうと、身震いしていた。
○生存者は孫一人 大槌の越田林兵衛は一家十人の家族であったが、その九人は悉く惨死を遂げ、孫一人（八歳）が不思議にも蓬莱島に押し流されて、助け舟に救い上げられた。まだ乳を求めて泣くほどの幼さであれば、これを育てる者は誰であろうかと思うと、血の涙が静かに流れる。
○ただ一人助かる 吉里吉里の前川善右衛門は、友人の家で酒宴の最中に突然流され、珊瑚島において助け舟に救われた。他の友人はみな死亡したという。
○漁師の言葉 当夜、漁業に従事していた人が言うには、「いつものように魚を取る少し前に、鉄砲のような音がした。船かと思って見渡したが船はなかった。帰ってみると、たちまち海嘯があった」とのことである。
○兵士が畑の中に落ちる 大槌町の某旅店に宿泊していた帰休兵士某は、海嘯の当日、同行の三人と共に舟遊びに出かけ、海上に浮かんでいたところ、突然海嘯のために船が転覆し、体は舟から離れて波と共に陸地の方へ打ち上げられ、町を越えて自分が宿泊していた宿屋の畑

○嬰児一名の生存 大槌町の某は、下男下女を合わせて一家十一人暮らしであったが、変災の当日、いち早く赤ちゃん（昨年十二月出生）を背負って高所に逃れたものの、他の家族が一人も来ないため、救い出そうと赤ちゃんをその場に置いて引き返したが、その甲斐もなく、家族全員溺死し、赤ちゃん一人だけが生き残ったという。
○妊婦の僥倖 三浦ナカという妊娠中の女性がいた。この人も当日の流された者の一人であったが、この婦人は海辺で育っただけに水泳の心得があるばかりか、気性も勇ましい性質であったため、板子（舟板）に泳ぎ着き、波のまにまに蓬莱島に漂着し、酒造用の桶に捕まって岸に上ろうとしたが、何度も深みに沈んでは浮き上がり、また板子に取りすがって、ようやく同島に登り、命を全うすることができたという。誠に幸運な女性というべきである。当時、同婦人が逆巻く激浪の中で助けを叫ぶ声を聞いた中村機関兵は、女の身ゆえにどうすることもできず、見殺しにしてしまったとして、今なお嘆き続けているという。
○大槌の人々が青麦を食べる 米も塩も共に不足し、生存住民が飢餓に瀕し、ついに青麦を食べる者が出るに至った。
○二軍人の惨死 近衛師団第三連隊第三中隊・西郷中尉の部下であった一等軍曹・佐瀬冨吉氏は、日清戦争の戦功により勲八等白色桐葉章を下賜され、今回予備役に入り帰郷していた。また軍艦赤城の機関兵・中村芳太郎も同じく勲八等を下賜された予備兵であり、二人とも当日催された凱旋祝捷会の主賓であったが、あわれ海嘯の敵を払う術もなく、空しく無念の霊と化してしまった。悲哀に沈む遺族の恨みは、さぞかしと察せられて憐れである。

(Baba) was fortunate enough to survive by being blown through the roof of a house, but the other fireworks handlers, laborers, and children were reduced to sea foam, their bodies never to be found.
At that moment, the cries of "Tsunami! Tsunami!" alerted the many spectators watching from far away. Thanks to these cries, a great many lives were saved. Indeed, it is said that Kurata Yasunosuke, a civic-minded resident of the town, fled in a panic upon hearing these cries and thus survived.
○ Hearing the sound of a great cannon at sea On the day of the great tsunami, a fisherman from Ōtsuchi Town who was engaged in fishing far out at sea heard what sounded like a massive cannon shot from out in the ocean at around six o'clock in the evening. He strained his eyes and looked in all directions, but could see no large warship amid the vast blue waves. Wondering at the strange sound, he returned to port, where he found that this great tsunami had indeed occurred. The fisherman survived with his life, and trembled to think that the cannon-like sound must have been the moment of a great disturbance on the ocean floor, and that therein lay the cause of the great tsunami.
○ Only One Grandchild Survived Koshida Rinbei of Ōtsuchi had a household of ten people, but nine of them all perished horribly. Miraculously, one grandchild (eight years old) was swept to Hōrai Island and was rescued by a rescue boat. Since the child still cries for milk, one wonders who will nurture it — and at this thought, tears of blood fall quietly.
○ Only One Person Survived Maekawa Zenuemon of Kirikiri, who was in the midst of a drinking party at a friend's home, was suddenly swept away and was rescued by a rescue boat at Sango Island. All of his other companions died.
○ A Fisherman's Account A person who was engaged in fishing that night reported: "Just before I usually catch fish, there was a sound like a gunshot. I looked around thinking it was a ship, but there was no ship. When I returned home, a tsunami had suddenly occurred."
○ A Soldier Falls into a Field A soldier on leave who was staying at a certain inn in Ōtsuchi Town had gone out boating with three companions on the day of the tsunami. They were floating on the sea when the tsunami suddenly capsized their boat. The soldier's body was separated from the boat and, carried by the waves toward land, was flung over the town and landed in the vegetable garden

of the very inn where he had been staying. What a remarkable thing indeed.
○ One Infant Survives A certain resident of Ōtsuchi Town, whose household consisted of eleven people including servants, quickly carried the infant (born the previous December) on his back and fled to high ground on the day of the disaster. However, since none of the other family members came, he set the infant down and went back to rescue them, but to no avail — all the family members drowned, and only the infant survived.
○ A Pregnant Woman's Good Fortune There was a pregnant woman named Miura Naka. She too was among those swept away that day, but as a woman who had grown up by the sea, she not only knew how to swim but also had a bold and courageous temperament. She swam to a plank and, drifting with the waves, washed up on Hōrai Island. She clung to a sake barrel and tried to climb ashore, sinking again and again into the depths and surfacing, then grasping the plank once more, until she finally managed to climb up to the island and preserve her life. She was truly a fortunate woman. At the time, a naval engineer named Nakamura heard her cries for help amid the swirling waves, but as she was a woman there was nothing he could do, and he has been lamenting ever since that he had to watch her nearly drown.
○ The People of Ōtsuchi Eat Green Wheat Both rice and salt were in short supply, the surviving residents were on the verge of starvation, and it came to the point where some people were eating unripe green wheat.
○ The Tragic Deaths of Two Servicemen First Sergeant Sase Tomikichi, who served under Second Lieutenant Saigō of the Third Company, Third Regiment of the Imperial Guard Division, had been awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, 8th Class (White Paulownia Leaves with Ribbon) for distinguished service in the Sino-Japanese War, and had recently entered the reserve forces and returned home. Naval engineer Nakamura Yōtarō of the warship Akagi had likewise been awarded the 8th Class decoration and was also a reservist. Both men had been the guests of honor at a victory celebration held that day, but alas, they had no way to fend off the enemy that was the tsunami, and they perished, their spirits left to harbor eternal grievance. One can only imagine the grief and resentment of their bereaved families — how pitiable they are.
○ Trade Utterly Destroyed Most of the residents of Yokkaichi and Yōkaichi districts within Ōtsuchi Town made their living through a combination of commerce and farming. Although their homes and lives were spared in this calamity, their fields were devastated and they had nowhere to sell their goods. In particular, Ryōishi and Kiri—
