○惨死者は第二回目の津波に多い
一度逃げ延びた人が、第一波の津波が引いたのを見て、子供を助けようと、あるいは家財を持ち出そうと引き返した瞬間、第二波の大津波が来たため、惨死者はこの時に倍増したという。
○全滅者
一家に一人も残さず完全に死亡した家は、小字川向だけで二十三戸あり、その他も推して知るべきである。
○山田町の旅館での出来事
本宿彌八郎方に泊まっていた旅客（二十四、五歳）は、津波が来たと聞いて逃げ出そうとした時には、すでに海水が胸のあたりまで達しており、一人で歩くことさえ困難な状況であった。そこへ四人の婦人が左右からしがみついてきたため、ますます進退窮まり、「放せ、危ない」と制止しても婦人たちはますますしがみついてきたので、ついに水中に倒れ、男女五人一塊となって五、六間も押し流されたが、運よく潰れた家の上に止まり、いずれも一命を取り留めたとのことである。
○ある惨事
山田の白戸仙太郎は、一家三組の夫婦が流れてくる家屋に追い詰められること三回あったが、ついには免れた。しかし老父は腰が立たなくなり、妻は流産して三日目に死亡したとのことである。
○田んぼの中の死骸
災害後、田んぼの泥を浚えたところ、乳飲み子を抱いた婦人の死骸が出てきた。顔かたちは変わってはいたが、衣類などからマンという婦人であることが判明した。この婦人は津波が来るや否や一目散に逃げ出したが、乳児を抱いていたため、誤って泥濘の中に落ち込み、進退が自由にならないところを荒波に打たれてこの最期を遂げたものであろうという。
○哀絶
山田に今年四十歳になる未亡人がいた。夫と死別してから三年余り、五歳の娘と二歳の男の子を心の拠りどころとして、その成長を楽しみに暮らしていたが、今度の津波に遭い、五歳の子は逃げ出したところを波に引かれ、母は二歳の子を抱きながら田んぼの中に打ち込まれ、親子三人が前後に倒れて死んでいたのは、実に気の毒の至りであった。

助役の貫洞勉也は死亡し、収入役の阿部照治は就任後わずか三日で死亡し、さらに書記二名も同じ運命に遭ったとのことである。
○山田の被害が甚だしい川向における種々の惨話
関源達という医者は家族十三人が死亡し、自身のみ無事であった。工藤源貞は家族九名全滅。鈴木善之助は一家五名が死亡し、本人のみ助命。田村平五郎は一族十五名のうち養子の茂八一名のほかは全滅。太田五郎右衛門は家内十六人のうち助かったのは二人のみとのことである。
○被害地の状況
飯岡は山田町南部の低地にあり、津波の直撃を受けたため、海に接する部分は人畜家財を一掃し、高地に接する部分は数百の家屋・船舶が微塵となって幾重にも積み重なり、その惨状は言葉で形容するすべもない。山田は東北低地の部分の被害の状況がおおよそ飯岡と同様で惨状は目も当てられず、あちこちから掘り出す死体はすでに日数が経っているため、顔も手足も腐爛し、どこの誰であるかを知るすべもなく、一見して思わず血の涙を迸らせずにはいられない。
●大沢村
大沢村は山田湾の北岸にある漁村で、戸数百八十、人口八百五十三人であったが、大津波のために百七十四戸が破壊・流失し、四百七十四人が死亡した。村長藤原熊吉氏夫婦をはじめ、収入役阿部五郎三郎等がことごとく死亡し、書記は欠員中であるため無政府状態となった。すなわち臨時村長を立てたものの、公文書類がことごとく流失してしまったため、なす術がないとのことである。

**○ Most Deaths Occurred During the Second Wave**
Those who had managed to escape initially, upon seeing the first wave recede, turned back to rescue their children or retrieve their belongings. At that very instant, the second great tsunami struck, and the death toll is said to have doubled at this moment.
**○ Complete Annihilation**
Households in which not a single family member survived numbered twenty-three in the sub-district of Kawamuki alone; the rest can be imagined accordingly.
**○ Incident at a Yamada Town Inn**
A traveler (aged about twenty-four or twenty-five) staying at Motonjuku Yahachi's inn heard that the tsunami was coming and tried to flee, but by then the seawater had already reached chest height, making even walking alone extremely difficult. At that moment, four women clung to him from both sides, leaving him utterly unable to move. Though he cried, "Let go! It's dangerous!" the women only clung more tightly, until he finally fell into the water. The group of five—one man and four women—were swept along six or seven meters before fortunately coming to rest atop a collapsed house, and all are said to have survived with their lives.
**○ A Tragic Incident**
Shiraito Sentaro of Yamada and three married couples in his household were cornered three times by houses swept toward them by the waves, but ultimately managed to escape. However, his aged father lost the use of his legs, and his wife suffered a miscarriage and died three days later.
**○ Corpse Found in a Rice Field**
After the disaster, when the mud in the rice paddies was dredged, the body of a woman clutching an infant was discovered. Though her face had changed, her clothing identified her as a woman named Man. It is said that when the tsunami struck, she fled at full speed, but as she was carrying an infant, she accidentally fell into the mud and mire, became unable to move freely, and was struck by the raging waves, meeting her end in this manner.
**○ A Tale of Utter Sorrow**
In Yamada there was a widow who turned forty that year. Having lost her husband, she had lived for over three years finding purpose in raising her five-year-old daughter and two-year-old son, looking forward to watching them grow. When the tsunami struck, the five-year-old was swept away by the waves while trying to escape, and the mother, clutching her two-year-old, was hurled into a rice paddy. All three—mother and children—were found lying dead one after another, which was truly the most pitiable of sights.

**○ The Devastation of Kamayado**
This is a sub-district at the northern tip of Yamada. Houses were destroyed, bodies were scattered everywhere, and the nearby rice paddies were completely washed away. The scene of devastation was too horrible to behold.
**○ Theft of Belongings and Money**
Having barely survived but having lost all food, clothing, and shelter, and falling into the depths of misery, some of the poor, as is unfortunately common in such circumstances, immediately lost their moral sense. Upon seeing chests of drawers and other items washed up at the foot of the mountains, many individuals immediately plundered money and clothing from within them. Given the magnitude of the disaster, police presence was insufficient, and dealing with this situation was said to be extremely difficult.
**○ Losses Among Village Office Staff**
Assistant Mayor Kando Tsutoya perished. Revenue Officer Abe Teruharu died just three days after taking up his post, and two additional clerks met the same fate.
**○ Various Tragic Accounts from Kawamuki, the Most Heavily Damaged Area of Yamada**
A physician named Seki Gentatsu lost thirteen family members while he alone survived unharmed. Kudo Gensada lost all nine family members. Suzuki Zennosuke lost all five members of his household, with only himself surviving. Tamura Heigoro lost fourteen out of fifteen relatives, with only his adopted son Moshichi surviving. Ota Gorouemon had only two survivors out of sixteen family members.
**○ Conditions in the Affected Areas**
Ioka is situated on low ground in the southern part of Yamada Town and bore the full brunt of the tsunami attack. The portion adjacent to the sea was completely swept clean of people, livestock, and property, while the portion near the higher ground was buried under layers of shattered houses and boats reduced to splinters, presenting a scene of devastation that defies description. The damage in the low-lying northeastern area of Yamada was much the same as Ioka—too horrifying to look upon. The bodies being dug out here and there had already been lying for some days, and the faces, hands, and feet had all decomposed, making it impossible to identify who they were; the sight could not but cause involuntary tears of grief.
**● Osawa Village**
Osawa Village was a fishing village on the northern shore of Yamada Bay, with 180 households and a population of 853. The great tsunami destroyed or washed away 174 of those households and killed 474 people. Village headman Fujiwara Kumakichi and his wife, revenue officer Abe Gorosaboro, and others all perished; as the clerical positions were also vacant, the village was left in a state of anarchy. A temporary village headman was appointed, but as all official documents had been washed away, there was said to be nothing that could be done.
