付鍬ヶ崎より四名の芸妓（げいしや）を聘（へい）せしが其一人は式場（しきぢやう）近くに来りし
時下駄の鼻緒（はなを）を切れり由て之をたてつゝあるうちに他の三人は

○三人の篤志家 同地の医師・佐々城英信氏は高台に住んでいたため辛うじて命を拾った一人であるが、その家族・家屋はすべて行方不明となった。それでもなお涙をこらえ、寝食を忘れて患者の救護その他に尽力した。また鳥居金兵衛・落合庄三郎の両氏は、共に翌日宮古から見舞いのために来たものであるが、その窮状を黙って見ていることができず、あるいは警察官を助け、あるいは仮役場員を助けて、並々ならぬ力を尽くしたという。まことに感心の至りである。
○「効徳丸」の陸揚げ式 同船は小湊と呼ばれる地の法華宗信徒が新たに造った帆前船で、同日（6月15日）端午の佳節を選んで進水式を挙行し、たいへん盛会であったそうだが、夜に入るや否や突然津波の襲撃を受け、陸上遠くに打ち揚げられ、今はわずかにその船体を残すのみとなった。村民たちはこれを見て「進水式がとうとう陸揚げ式になった、これは何の前兆であろうか」などと言い合って、一同苦笑したという。
○百五十六名のうち四名 田老村の小湊にて帆前船の進水式を行うにあたり、その様子を見ようと山奥から来た者が百五十六名いたが、津波は無残にもこれを惨殺し、わずか四人を生存させたに過ぎなかった。
○津波を目撃する 小湊の人が海岸の岩の高い所にいて、異様な波の音を聞くと同時に、潮が三百間余り引き、明らかに海底が光るのを見るや否や、轟然たる響きとともに十丈余りの激浪が岩を砕いて陸上を襲い、停泊していた帆前船を陸上に打ち上げた。その勢いのすさまじさは言葉に尽くし難かったと聞く。
○芸妓の幸運 津波の当日、小湊で帆前船の進水式を行うにあたり、鍬ヶ崎から四名の芸妓が招かれたが、その一人は式場近くに来たとき下駄の鼻緒が切れた。そこでそれを直しているうちに他の三人は式場に入った。

○一村の生存者十一人 小本村大字大田は、四十二戸のうち一戸を残すのみで、その他の家屋はことごとく流失したほどであるから、辛うじて溺死を免れて生存した者はわずか十一人（うち男三人・女八人）に過ぎなかったという。
○かんざしによってかろうじて妻と分かる 同村のある人は、家族が皆流されてしまったため、その遺体を捜索したところ、妻の遺体は激浪に揉まれて顔の皮膚が剥がれ落ち、誰であるか分からなかったが、髪留めのかんざしによってかろうじてそれと確認できたという。
○逃げた馬のおかげで助かる 同村のある家では、当日牧場の馬が逃げ出したため、長男（十六、七歳）がこれを捕まえようと追いかけて行った後、間もなく津波が来て一家悉く死亡したという。
○出産した子を置いて波にのまれる 小本村のある婦人は以前から妊娠中であったが、今回の凶変のため必死に家を飛び出したところ、途中で陣痛が起き、その場で出産した。しかし無残にも押し寄せる怒濤のために母子ともにのみ込まれ、また寄せ来る波によって不思議にも子供は山の中腹に打ち上げられて命に別状なく、母は千尋の底に沈んで帰らぬ人となったという。
○小本付近の惨状 小本付近では、津波のために小本村・中小本・井ノ小成がことごとく流失し、役場書記および巡査の妻が溺死したという。

○松島の傾斜 田の畑村字島の越の海岸に孤立していた松島は、津波のために北から南へ傾斜したという。同島の周囲は二丁余り、水面からの高さは一丈五尺ほどである。

Both rescue physicians, including Tanzaki Kuninosuke, along with several nurses, were dispatched to the area. Police officers were busy managing recovered property and handling such tasks as locating bodies, arranging cremations, and other related duties, while medical staff received patients and devoted themselves to their treatment and care.
○Three Admirable Individuals Dr. Sasaki Hidenobu, a physician of the area, was one of those who barely escaped with his life as he had lived on higher ground, but his entire family and home were lost without a trace. Even so, holding back his tears and forgetting sleep and meals, he devoted himself tirelessly to caring for patients and other relief efforts. Torii Kinbee and Ochiai Shozaburo both came from Miyako the following day to offer their condolences, but unable to silently watch the desperate situation, they assisted the police and temporary village office staff, exerting extraordinary effort. Their conduct was truly admirable.
○The "Kōtoku-maru's" Landing Ceremony The vessel was a newly built sailing ship belonging to followers of the Nichiren (Hokke) sect in the area called Kominato. On that day (June 15th), they had chosen the auspicious occasion of the Boy's Festival to hold a launching ceremony, which was reportedly quite a grand event. However, no sooner had night fallen than the ship was suddenly struck by the tsunami and hurled far inland, now leaving only its hull remaining. The villagers, upon seeing this, remarked to one another, "The launching ceremony has finally become a landing ceremony — what omen could this be?" and shared bitter smiles all around.
○Four Survivors out of One Hundred and Fifty-Six At Kominato in Taro Village, one hundred and fifty-six people had come from deep in the mountains to witness the sailing ship's launching ceremony. The tsunami mercilessly slaughtered them, leaving only four alive.
○Witnessing the Tsunami A person from Kominato was positioned on a high rocky point along the shore when they heard an unusual sound from the waves. At the same moment, the tide receded over three hundred ken, and the sea floor could clearly be seen glowing with light. Then, with a thunderous roar, waves of over ten jō crashed through the rocks and swept over the land, hurling the anchored sailing vessel onto the shore. The ferocity of its force was said to be beyond words.
○A Geisha's Good Fortune On the day of the tsunami, four geisha had been invited from Kuigasaki to attend the sailing ship's launching ceremony at Kominato. As one of them approached the venue, the thong of her geta sandal broke. While she was stopping to repair it, the other three entered the ceremony hall.

At that very moment, the tsunami swept away those three geisha along with all the other attendees, but the remaining one was saved by her broken sandal thong. It was truly a miraculous occurrence.
●Kita-Hei District, Same Prefecture
●Ohmoto Village
○Only Eleven Survivors in an Entire Village In Ota, a large section (ōaza) of Ohmoto Village, all but one of the forty-two households were completely washed away. Of those who barely escaped drowning, only eleven people survived (three men and eight women).
○A Wife Identified Only by Her Hairpin A certain man in the village searched for the bodies of his family, all of whom had been swept away. His wife's body had been so battered by the violent waves that the skin had been stripped from her face, making her unrecognizable. She was identified only by the hairpin in her hair.
○Saved by a Runaway Horse At a certain household in the village, a horse had escaped from the pasture on that day. The eldest son (about sixteen or seventeen years old) went off chasing after it to catch it, and shortly thereafter the tsunami came and killed every member of the family remaining at home.
○Swept Away After Giving Birth A certain woman of Ohmoto Village had been pregnant for some time. In the chaos of the disaster, she desperately fled from her home, but went into labor on the way and gave birth on the spot. Tragically, however, the surging waves engulfed both mother and child. Then, remarkably, with the next wave, the child was cast up onto the mountainside, surviving without serious injury, while the mother sank to the bottom of the deep sea, never to return.
○The Devastation Around Ohmoto In the vicinity of Ohmoto, the tsunami completely destroyed Ohmoto Village, Nakaomoto, and Inokoshige, washing them all away. The village office clerk and the wife of a police officer drowned.
●Tanohata Village
○The Tilting of Matsushima Matsushima, an isolated island standing on the coast at Shimanokoshi in Tanohata Village, was tilted from north to south by the tsunami. The circumference of the island is a little over two chō, and it rises approximately one jō and five shaku above the water's surface.
