**Summary of the Method for Foreknowing Calamities and Preserving Physical Health**
The great tsunami that struck the coastal regions of Rikuzen, Rikuchū, and Mutsu this time was truly an unprecedented catastrophe, one that fills us with unbearable shock and grief. I find it most regrettable that so few people are aware of a remarkable method that has long existed for foreknowing such disasters. I therefore recorded the firsthand accounts I have experienced since the age of fifteen, and in Meiji 25 [1892] had tens of thousands of copies printed and distributed. Consequently, there must certainly have been people in the Sanriku region who put this method to use during this disaster.
As for the origins of this method, I cannot say precisely when they date, but there is an account of a certain private physician who foreknew a tsunami that struck the coast of Izu Province, led several dozen people to flee up into the mountains, and thereby escaped great calamity. The method itself is extremely simple and can be performed by anyone. The procedure is as shown in the figures.
**[Explanation of Figures 1 and 2]**
First, using the thumb and index finger of the left hand (as in Figure 1), feel the pulse of the artery located at the roots of the lower back teeth on both left and right sides (at the pressure point known as "Daigei"). Next (as in Figure 2), use the right hand to feel the pulse at the left wrist. (This method applies equally whether performed on oneself or on another person.)
When the pulse at the three points — the roots of the back teeth on both sides and the wrist — are all the same, this is a sign of safety. Conversely, when the pulses are irregular, it is a forewarning that a life-threatening catastrophe will occur within twenty-four hours. In such a case, one should promptly evacuate from that location and move to a place where the pulses become regular again. If, no matter where one goes, only one person's pulse remains irregular while everyone else's returns to normal, this indicates that that one person alone faces a separate calamity or is about to suffer illness or disaster.
In any event, had this method been widely tried before this great tsunami, surely many more people would have been spared an untimely death. It is a source of deep regret to me that the time had not yet come to disseminate this divine art more widely. I hereby record this summary in the hope that it may serve as some assistance in preserving the health and lives of people throughout the world. I earnestly request that readers try this method after reading it once.

Regarding this method, a small booklet entitled *Shintai Hozen Hō* [Method for Preserving Physical Health] was previously published, receiving the endorsement of His Excellency Sugi, Junior Chamberlain, who was kind enough to write the title in his own hand. As the confirmed reports of various individuals have also been included, one may learn of the documented history of this divine art. One copy of this book is priced at twenty sen; however, on this occasion only, payment in postage stamps will be accepted, and no postage fee will be charged.
