While there are many brush-painting copybooks for elementary schools on the market, most err in the ordering of their content, or the brushwork is too careless to serve as a proper model. On the rare occasion that one possesses genuine technical merit, it is usually produced by those without experience in education, covering subjects too advanced for children's abilities. Mr. Ōhashi recognized this problem long ago and compiled this work based on his many years of teaching experience and scholarship — drawing on the curriculum he taught to normal school students, the practical drawing exercises of the affiliated elementary school, and further consulting the realities of general elementary schools, as well as the opinions of leading educational authorities, with repeated revisions. We are therefore confident that no other elementary drawing copybook can compare. We sincerely hope to receive the honor of your continued adoption.

Supplemented with "Study of Ancient Vessel Uses (古器用考)"
Compiled by Mr. Ōtsuki Shūji · Complete
This work reproduces ancient Chinese ritual vessels, produced under imperial order by the Qianlong Emperor. The original illustrations are drawn from the *Kaogu Tu* (考古図) and *Bogu Tu* (博古図), with scholarly annotations incorporating the views of such luminaries as Ouyang Xiu, Dong Yi, Huang Bo, and Xue Shanggong — surpassing the contributions of any individual scholar. The original forms of ancient vessels such as the ding (鼎), pan (盤), and zun (尊) are difficult even for the Chinese to ascertain today, to say nothing of our own country. Only two copies of this work have ever reached Japan; while those in the arts and crafts have copied and transmitted it, the originals have passed through so many hands that the true forms have been distorted, making it impossible to grasp their authentic appearance. Although a woodblock reprinting is now being undertaken for the first time, it is a large-scale work and cannot easily come into the hands of practitioners. The loss is truly considerable. In order to remedy this and make the material easily accessible, 329 items have been selected from the original 42 volumes containing over 3,600 varieties — excluding duplicates in form and pattern — and compiled into two volumes to reduce the burden on readers. Careful study of this book will allow one not only to research the ancient vessels of China's Three Dynasties, but also to obtain excellent reference material of antique refinement for archaeology, painting, sculpture, embroidery, and dyeing, surely advancing one's mastery of the arts by multiple degrees. Above all, the patterns in this ancient mirror record are the very source of Japan's own ancient design traditions — a treasure that no craftsman can afford to be without.
However, each vessel had its own specific use, and if one creates a vessel without understanding its purpose, one will not only invite ridicule but also produce fine craftsmanship that fails to serve any social benefit. Therefore, when proceeding with the stone engraving of this new selected edition, we consulted on this matter with Joden Koji (如電居士), Mr. Ōtsuki, who has long held views on the uses of ancient vessels. He graciously compiled a special supplement, "Study of Ancient Vessel Uses," which serves as an annotated guide to the essential points of ancient vessels. This has been appended at the end of the volume for the convenience of practical users. We sincerely hope that scholars of archaeology, arts, crafts, and fine arts will purchase copies in succession.

**Illustrations of the Extreme Devastation of the Great Tsunami**
Size: 1 shaku 8 sun long × 1 shaku 3 sun wide · Lithograph · Detailed color illustration
- By Ogata Gekkō — 1 sheet
- By Tomioka Eisen — 1 sheet
- By Yamamoto Shōkoku — 1 sheet
Price: 4 sen per sheet · Postage: 2 sen
The tsunami that struck was truly an unprecedented disaster for our country. Raging, furious waves rolled in and swept the entire coastline of Sanriku — across dozens of miles as far as the eye could see, sparing neither inlet nor village, mercilessly sweeping away homes, sweeping away livelihoods, and, most pitifully, consigning living people to watery graves. Our publishing house has commissioned the three master artists Ogata Gekkō, Tomioka Eisen, and Yamamoto Shōkoku to depict the actual conditions of that time, and we now offer their works for sale as beautiful, vivid colored lithographs. The utterly wretched state of the devastation will give viewers the feeling of being transported directly to the scene. We sincerely hope you will purchase a print and come to know the pitiable reality of what occurred.
